I'm fairly new to PC gaming as we know it today but I've always been really into strategy games. I recently completed World In Conflict and I was amazed on what I was missing for the past decade in PC gaming. I'll probably purchase Crysis next but I think real time strategy is the PC's bread and butter.

I'm curious to see what people consider the best strategy games ofthe past decade. I've heard all but praise from games like Company of Heroes, Sins of a Solar Empire and of course StarCraft II but I know I'm missing some gems that I'd like to try.

Thoughts?

One of my favourites is Red Alert 2! I remember when I was in primary school and people had to think of group names, I suggested Red Alert but everyone thought it should be "Blue Alert" instead How crazy is that?! Ah, kids say the darnedest things!

That's a really hard question. If you like futuristic, economy heavy, large scale games Supreme Commander is awesome. If you like to micromanage your units, expand from one location to another, and have some RPG-ish elements Warcraft 3 would be the right choice. If you like grand strategy games that are super historically accurate Europa Universalis 3 and all its expansions and mods are perfect for that. If you like Company of Heroes and also like the warhammer universe, Dawn of War 2 is very good. Also, Homeworld 2 is one of the best RTS games ever made. Medieval 2: Total War and its expansion are also really good, and shine as the best Total War games released yet.

Company of Heroes is my personal favorite.

The Dawn of War games are also great, Starcraft II and Homeworld 1/2 are worth checking out (1 is 1998 but its aged extremely well).

The Battle for Middle Earth RTS games are pretty solid, and the Battlestations games are also fun if you like being able to control individual units.

World in Conflict is a great game to get into RTS's with, and one of my favorites of the decade. Hope you managed to find some people to play online with, the Multiplayer is fantastic.

I also loved Red Alert 2. World in Conflict sort of reminded me of Red Alert 2 from a premise and local stand point. Red Alert did have some great units and entertaining missions.

My brother is a big fanof the Dawn of War series but I myself havn't given them a try. I've played both Homeworlds and Cataclysm but I was wondering how Sins of a Solar Empire compared.

I havn't played World in Conflict online yet I read from reviews that it is very team oriented so I'm concerned on how other players play (I'm always tenative to play strategy games online with people I don't know).

Did they also want to rename it at your school?! :(

If there is any online community remaining i would guess that it would be a small, dedicated group of players that take the game seriously, so i wouldn't worry about that. I'd definitely give it a try though, Its my favorite multiplayer game ever, so much fun. Makes the singleplayer campaign seem a bit lame in comparison (although its still a really solid campaign)

Supreme Commander 2. After you are done with that, try Supreme Commander (1) (which is not on Steam, sadly). It is $22 on Steam - I enjoyed the campaign and some of skirmishes were pretty fun. If you like an interwoven story, SupCom2 is pretty nice.

Dawn of Discovery

Dungeon Keeper II

Age of Empires III

-All great strategy games that are different from each other, but equally fun.

DEFCON: Everybody Dies. The phrase 'less is more' certainly applies here. A stunning take on thermonuclear war. I highly recommend this game if you're more interested in gameplay than visuals.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Rise of Nations, Galactic Civilizations II and Armageddon Empires yet.

Rome TW and Medieval II TW are the best ones if you ask me. Rice of Nations and Age of Empires 3 are good too. C&C games aren't bad either. In other words there are a lot of very good strategy games on the market. You'll just have to find one that suits you.

Starcraft 2 is overrated and imbalanced. Terrans are overpowered tbh. However, I would recommend Company of Heroes or DEFCON: Everybody Dies.

maybe not just the last ten years but here goes 1. Medieval 2 Total War + expansions 2. Rome Total War + expansions 3. Europa Universalis 3 + all expansions (not yet mentioned, a bit diplomacy and trade heavy though) 4. Space Empires V (also not mentioned a fantastic in-depth game thats along the lines of CIV) 5. Panzer General 6. X-Com 7. C&C red alert 8. Dune 2000 (basically the first C&C game, totally underated) 9. Outpost (brilliant space colony building game, less strategy more tycoon style though) 10. Empire Total War **** requires all patches and some AI mods before its as good as it should be*** You may have noticed that Civilisation is missing form the list, atm I am unable to reconcile my differences with that series of games although someday soon I may be able to embrace them as I used to.

Wrong and Wrong.

The only games more balanced than Starcraft 2 are Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 3. The recent patch fixed any kind of imbalances that were in the Terrans favor.

Tons of people still play Starcraft 1, Warcraft 3, and Starcraft 2 for a reason....balance. It's the only thing that is 100% required for a game to remain popular for so long.

I'm pretty sure things like the game being incredibly fun and addictive have something to do with it as well coupled with an extremely high skill ceiling always room for improvement since as good as you are there's always someone better then you.
