Get an antistatic wristband, costs $20 or something on Newegg. The cost-free alternative is to touch a metal part of the case each time you handle a new part to try and neutralize (ground) yourself.

I'd say wood is a good surface to use. To eliminate static electricity, use an anti-static wristband or just touch a piece of unpainted metal on your case. You shouldn't have any issues.

Yes wood is a good idea, metal, even if you put like a sheet above it, will scratch your case. Atleast it did to mine.

I built my PC on a wooden table - but also consider the floor/surface you are standing on. If the floor is carpeted you can generate static electricity more easily moving around on that than you would on a tiled or wooden floor. I didn't use an anti static strap, but grounded myself on the case regularly, and was very cautious about which parts of components I was handling while putting them

I would say wood is good, glass probably would be a good one too. Stay away from carpet or plastic based surfaces, they tend to generate a lot of static.

You'd be better off removing them, as they will generate static electricity rubbing on your feet, especially if you're on carpet.

don't buy a wristband, just tie some copper wire around your finger and a piece of the case... 5 cent alternative that works just as well.
