Best is probably the first one, and they're even harder than CSS to get into. I mean, that hole in the disk is SMALL!

Unless there's a specific setting that you're interested in (Ancient Japan, Ancient Rome, Medieval Europe), I'd recommend just getting the most recent one - Medieval 2: Total War.

As for how hard they are to get into...well, there is a steep learning curve, but the tutorial does a fairly good job of teaching you the basics. After that, they get really addictive.

Medieval 2: Total war is best and also expansion is damn good if you like to focus more on a small region with much more depth.

Rome. Medieval 2 lacks the charm of Rome.

Imo Rome lacks something that M2 has. Realism, not saying that M2 is very realistic, but still.

Rome has more fairy tale : D

I liked Rome quite abit because Ive done alot of classical studies so im familiar with the concepts, but Medieval total war 2 has to the take the prize for larger epic battles, a more realistic take on the campaign, and generally more diversity when it comes to factions.

Out of Medieval 1 and Rome I vote Rome. I prefer the classical setting compared to the middle ages type setting.

I agree, its basically RTW with better graphics, I really can't see where you go wrong with getting this game.

Wow, I just recently bought Medieval II but haven't really started it yet. I'm more encouraged now that many of you hold it in such high regard.

I'd have to go with the first Medieval: Total War. Even though I find warfare in the middle ages rather dull, it's got the best AI of the lot. Rome and Medieval both look nice and there are some truly first rate mods out for both (I'm playing a campaign with the Stainless Steel mod for MII:TW currently), the AI in both the strategic layer and the tactical layer is just not a challenge at all. It's a testament to all the nice things that are in the game that I still go back to play it in spite of the braindead AI, but it really does feel like there's a sense of inevitability about the whole thing. I know I'll win the game, so it's just a matter of grinding it out.
