Well, I can't give you too many specifics, but my mom managed to get a nice 36 inch LCD 1080p TV from Best Buy for only about $750. It was an open box model or floor model or something to that effect, and they gave her the difference between that price an the original listed price on a gift card, which she used to buy our washer and dryer. The TV was originally somewhere around $1200 or so, so saving half a third of the price for getting an open box model was more than worth it. My uncle did something similar recently, getting a 62 inch plasma TV and using the gift card money to buy a PS3 on the spot. Lucky guy... he doesn't even play games anymore... just watches a few Blu-rays here and there... But my advice would be no matter what you get, ask store employees about open box/floor models/other discounts. It can help you live rich easily. ;)

I have a friend that got a 32"VIZIO for $700-$800us and he says it plays in 1080p.He also has a 20something that plays in 720p and I have seen it in action with COD4 and GTA4,to me GTA4 on his 20 at 720p looks better than on my 42" Sharp Aquos 1080p.He got the 20 for $300-$400us.

The floor model and open box options are a good way to save money but you nor the employees know what has happened to the open box products or why they have been returned. The floor models are always on,no telling how long they are playing day in and day out. That reduces the life of the product.

If you just want a pretty decent hdtv, I'd go to wally world, and find out whats the best bang for your buck. You can find a pretty cheap phillips 50' 1080p tv for about 1000$.

I still think this is the best HDTV for around $1000. I own it, it came highly recommended, and loved it.

It's an Insignia 42" 1080p LCD TV. Here's the link at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8463076&type=product&id=1184767921005

It costs $996.00 and at Best Buy comes with a free 3 pack of Blu-Rays (ask the clerk about it)

The only thing people complain about is that the contrast ratio is extremely low (1200:1) which means that standard definition programming will look less smooth and more like a bad YouTube video. This is going to happen with all TVs and at this price, its about the best you'll get without buying clearence or open box. I use it for PS3, Wii, 360, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, PC, and an upscale DVD player. Everything looks GORGEOUS. If you can handle the mildly blurry standard def of cable, or if you're like me and don't watch TV (I've got hulu.com and various other sites for really popular tv) much, then you'll be fine.

Also, the speakers are kinda weak, but given that I've owned 1 HDTV projection tv, 1 HDTV plasma, and I currently own 2 LCD HDTVs, let me assure you that speakers suck on almost all HDTVs. You may want to pick up a cheap 5.1 surround sound if you don't already own one.

This is easily the best HDTV in terms of price and quality. I've owned it about 4 months and I'm not unhappy in the least.

Thanks for everybody's input but I just got a good deal at best buy for a 42" Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80U 720P for just about $900. Could've spent little over 300 and gotten it in 1080P but I couldn't tell the difference so instead using the left over money to put down on a 5.1 surround sound.

Awesome. Now we are on the same page but your TV is bigger than mine. I need me a 5.1 surround sound system as well. I was thinking a 7.1 but im not up 4 dropping a grand on a sound system. If you come across anything good send me a PM or sum. I would not recommend anything thats the up-convert I would want a reciever and the speakers dont go with sets that come with Dvd players unless it is something not worth giving up!

you could always get what I got

http://www.abt.com/product/29204.html

Free shipping too. Though I bought it when they had the customer appreciation sale, so I saved 5% more making it only 981 dollars.
