Okay, so here's the deal. I'm looking for a new graphics card, and game on 1680x1050.

I'd like to play almost everything maxed out. Would cards like the GTX 285 and the 5850 be overkill for my resolution?

Would cards like the 9800GTX+, 5770, or the 5830 be my best bet? (I could eventually Crossfire/SLI anything, if I needed the extra power)

4890 the 5850 isn't really much of an improvement from the 4890. The 4890 a good value imo.

gts 250 or a 4870. gts 250 is less then a 9800gtx and the same as a 9800gtx+. for those resolutions, yea a 5850 and gtx 285 is overkill. my 4890 plays everything maxed out at that res, even with AA and AF(even crysis). but if you forsee yourself getting a bigger monitor, then i would go for the 5870. 50$ more then a 5850(in canada) and a lot better. it is also future proof( for a couple years)

Tessellation uses the unified shader pipelines, so I would plan for that. I would wait for the price drop following Fermi's release, get a 5850, and then get a second one later when proper DX11 games are released...

I'll disagree, the HD5850 gives a good boost of performance over the HD4890, but when comparing price/performance the hd4890 will definetly win.

To the TC, you will be fine with a HD4890, but if you want to play games on higher settings for longer a HD5850 would be something good to aim for.

Considering the GTX460 can also be a good option because in future games it should have the upper hand over the hd5000 series.

really? It was weaker than a 4850X2 the last time I looked at the rankings. (and I have a 5850 btw. this is good news :) ) hehe

So, either a 4890 for the power, or a 5850 for the power and tesselation abilities?

Oh, and should I even consider the new GTX470 when it comes out? Apparently around the same price as the 5850 and its going to take me a month or two to save enough money for either.

I prefer nVidia, but I would get whichever DX11 card offers the most bang for my buck...

Well, if you want to go for the power/performance route the HD5850 is more efficient. It is faster than the HD4890 and also requires slightly less energy. The GTX400 series release on April 6th.

Well, in some games its faster, but remember that the HD4850x2 is also faster than the HD4890 on those games.

"Best Video Card" will always be the most powerful your money will allow you to buy. :P Threads like this should be more appropriately titled "What GPU for (insert budget limit here) will best handle (insert target resolution here)?" Of your choices, a 5830 would be your most preferable one if you specifically need DX11 support now. A 9800GTX+ though will still do quite handily and should be very reasonably priced. But why not consider a GTX 2** series as well (if the budget allows) ? Further, are you now or intending to run Windows Vista or 7 on your machine? If not, then the DX11 argument will be moot until you do a more substantial upgrade.
