We used Hamachi to be able to easily connect to each other, start a "virtual" LAN game and play the games we purchased. Yes, some people use it for piracy but don't paint everyone with the same brush. I mean hell, robbers use cars to get away from the crime scene. Does that mean everyone who is driving a car is a robber?
I use a VPN to play Silent Hunter 4 as there is no other way. I bought the game when it came out and the multiplayer lobby never worked. Even after purchasing the U-boat missions addon which included the final patch released. If I could play multiplayer without using a VPN then I would preffer that. Not everyone is a pirate out there and there are valid reasons to use VPN software.

VLAN? You're going to need a managed switch and a box that can control it. (PFsense can!) Also those who don't know, Vlans physically seperate your network. As in, you use a managed switch to create a vlan trunk and make a new subnet. Actually explaining a vlan in words is bogus, pictures are better http://wan2.cheesyboofs.co.uk/home.htm (This is with pfsense!)
VPN, you can use hamachi if you're a noob, or OpenVpn(not noob), I use them interchanably. I swap files from my laptops to my servers in seconds with a vpn. In the majority of the world, VPNs are not for gaming, in fact that is a silly reason to use a vpn.
