What's with the low scores recently? Zelda gets a 7.5 ?! Also how can you put a score like 8.5 to minecraft? And BF3 besides origin what's wrong with it?...Are they trying to be more mean with the scores or something?

TBH i dont think BF3 deserved higher and i think the review score was fair, but Minecraft is the closest to 10/10 of any game i have played this gen IMO. However thats my opinion just like those review scores are the the opinion of reviewer who reviewed it.
If Minecraft and BF3 where console ONLY games, but both games where exactly the same as how they are now, i believe both would have gotten a higher score from Gamespot reviewers though, thats my opinion too.
They all deserve higher.

That is a matter of perspective, personally I think high scores are given out far too easily these days. I would even say that Minecraft really isn't an 8.5 game at best I would give it 7.5. Now before you hang me I actually love minecraft and have sunk hundreds of hours into the game (still playing it today). However there are problems with the game and deficiencies in the gameplay which should be reflected in the reviews and the scores. I can't comment on Battlefield 3's score because I have never played it (not a fan of Origin) and I can't comment on Zelda's score because I don't play games on consoles.
This. I think there's a push from GS to start actually using more of the point scale.Mazoch
People are focusing too much on numbers. Read the review instead.

Minecraft deserves an 8.5. It is an awesome game but it has some really annoying issues/bugs
Battlefield 3 is one of my favorite FPS games (BF is the best FPS series), but it deserves an 8.5 MAYBE a 9. It has some poor design choices, a meh campaign and some issues.
Skyward Sword deserves at least an 8.5. I am not done with the game, but a 7.5 is way too harsh. I have come to realize that SS is a game that will have many different user opinions. Most of the things I find "wrong" with it, are my opinion. I am leaning towards a 9, but it could vary a bit.
[QUOTE="bonafidetk"]Remove the mindset "anything below 90% is crap" please.MazochThis. I think there's a push from GS to start actually using more of the point scale. A few years ago, scores had become so inflated that a game had to be near unplayable to get less than an 8.
I sure hope that's what is happen. The scale we've been using for the past few years of "10-9=Good, 8.5-8=Alright, and 7.5-0=Damn this game is ****!" is absolutely terrible.
The reviews are both good. They have good points and are fair. No amount of fanboyism should change that.

Your math must be different from mine. Where I live, 8.5 is only 1.5 away from 10. :|
Gamespot is using a 10 point scale. Ideally we should think that any game with a score over 5 would at least be worth trying.
A score of 5 should mean that the game is average. A score of 8.5 should mean that the game is very good, but still suffers from some flaws.
If looking at the scores disturbs you too much, try concentrating on the actual review and ignore the numbers.
How is 8.5 a low score?
Conno08
when most games get 9+ 8.5 seems low, and even 7.5 seems totally mediocre, gamespot just dont have any kind of standards around games and tetris can actually score higher than skyrim and many games of the sort.
8.5 is an incredible score.
the 10-point scale system is really losing its meaning. No thanks to people like the TC

They deserve lower because my opinion dictates it.
In all seriousness, I wouldn't be sad in the least if Gamespot cut numbers from their rating altogether.

Standards change and so has Gamespot's scoring methods. In the past year there's been a pretty strong push to back away from the heavy point inflation that's been happening this generation.
I think people have become too accustom to seeing any remotely good game getting a 9-10 rating from other websites. In my opinion, 8.5 is perfect for Battlefield 3. The online is fantastic, but the campain is among the most boring I've played in the FPS genre. If you're going to add an extra feature in your game then you should at least make it good rather simply throwing it in for the just sake of having one.

Or they can do it like other websites, use things like A, A-, B, B-, etc.Or they can do it like other websites, use things like A, A-, B, B-, etc.DanielDust
Something like that could work, though it could be simplified a bit more.
Like a "Unplayable" -> "Pretty bad" -> "Enjoyable" -> "Great" -> "Outstanding"
But I guess going that way still means 5 options... So why not 10 with a .5 system.
Eh. :P
Minecraft deserves a 6.0. It is not a very good game at all. However, that is because it is really not a game at all. The only "game" in it is the survival mechanics added in the adventurers patch. I find it more of a really fun sandbox editor than a game. shakmaster13How is it not a game.... you dont need a victory for it to be a game, it has crafting, rpg and action combat mechanics ontop of its sandbox nature....
How about this, we ask reviewers to forget about thinking of a number and give any hyped game a 10 since that's what readers want? Hell, if X game got a 10 readers would ask it should have scored an 11.

Then people would complain about Minecraft and all other games not getting an "outstanding" because "they deserved it"
