Bioshock 2 and Windows Live

Do I really have to have Windows LIve to play Bioshock 2? My single player games wont save unless I have Windows LIve? This is what I am hearing.

You can make an offline profile (takes like a second). You don't have to register for anything, but you are required to use Windows Live.
