Possibly be a demo for Bioshock? Not very interested in the game, but a demo to confirm my feelings would be nice. Extremely good reviews have already begun, and I don't want to have to buy the game because it's supposedley the greatest game of all time, and then never really play it (like I did with Half Life 2, although since CSS was included it was alright, I guess).

After playing the demo on my 360:

Well, just as I thought, I did not like the demo. Wasn't really fun to play.

It was interesting and stuff, but if the game is like the demo, there's nothing extremely special about the game. The combat was a lot like Oblivion. It didn't feel solid at all.

Kinda hard to explain (why it felt unsolid), but all I can think of is that everything felt soft. The guns didn't feel satisfying to shoot, when you hit people with the rench they would just kind of collapse on the floor.

I guess it will be another Half Life 2 for me. Definitely not buying the game.

Will there be a playable demo before the games release?
There are currently no plans to release a playable demo for BioShock.

From the FAQ thread on 2K Game's fourm found here. A demo is always nice for games, especially to see if it will running well enough on a system. Especially dissapointed that there isn't one planned for this game since my comp is starting to show its age. Game looks amazing, just not sure if it will run well...

Skip the PC game getting the mostlove from critics? I don't think I can, even if I'm not sure I see the appeal from where I'm sitting.

I have enough faith in Irrational to get this game without playing a demo. BioShock is one of only a limited handful of upcoming games I'm willing to buy without trying it first.

Agreed.

If we only played games because of the hype then i would be playing CS and WOW everyday. And neither of them is something that fits my taste, so bring on a demo.

Wow, I thought I would get flamed for wanting a demo and not being excited for the game. Seems like many people agree with me.

In an interview with one of the devs at E3 this year, the interviewer asked if there was going to be a demo. The response was something like this "We wont say there will be one, but we wont say there will not be one, we just don't want to do anything that could harm our initial sales"

Basically what he meant was that if they did release a demo, people who were considering buying it the day it came out may change there mind after realising they don't like how it plays or if it won't run on their computer.

There is a good bet that there will be a demo, but deffinately sometime after Bioshock is released.

Well, by the looks of this forum, they HAVE harmed their initial sales, all of these folks are saying they're not going to buy because of no demo.

Yeah, wish there was a demo  I might still buy it though, it will depend more on the info I can get from reviews now.

Sci-fi/Horror, Underwater, FPS/RPG is definitely something that interests me :D

Well, by the looks of this forum, they HAVE harmed their initial sales, all of these folks are saying they're not going to buy because of no demo.

Forums aren't a very stable setting to judge market appeal. Bioshock got best PC of e3 2007 from G4, Best PC artistic design and best PC game of e3 2007 from IGN, best action/adventure from game critics... I could go on. I don't think they have to worry too much about sales. Especially because this is the only one of the AAA PC game titles coming out anytime soon. The only competition they have is shadowrun, halo 2, overlord and STALKER.... which have been out for months.

Unless it was a direct quote I'd take that comment about worrying about a demo because "it will harm their sales" with a grain of salt. Firstly, I don't believe a dev would have said that... if anything, they may have had concern that making a game demo would cut back on their time to polish the game.

once upon a time, game developers released unfinished parts of a game or
similar interactive videos, way way way before the actuall game launch..

2007 the last few years the game producers have a tendency to only release the
demo along with the full game, or just a few weeks before.

Why ? no idea, but im sure they get better sales from it,
sad but true.. i guess.

Please notice, this is my personal experience i made this conclusion on!
No references or quotes simply made up in my mind. ;)

My thoughts exactly. 95% of games that I purchase is simply by trying out a demo and if I like the game I'll go get it. I would never have gotten Overlord if it wasn't for the demo, so they are very confused over at 2K I'd say.

I'm sure the demo was probably on the front burner at one time (if you look at Ken Levine's expression in Gamespot's 22min preview you can tell he's looking for words other than 'no.') But I think after they committed to a firm release date, they wound up with more polish-work to do, and naturally demo plans would have taken an immediate back-burner position rather than risking the delay of the shipped product -- we all know how 'understanding' the gaming community is over 11th-hour delays ;-) If you are going to put someone off, the easiest crowd to ditch is the ones clamoring for the pre-release demo -- most of which have an on-the-fence stance on the game. Better to appease the ones foaming at the mouth with their $60 US in hand... I would have enjoyed a pre-release demo but merely as a temporary 'chill' plasmid (if you will) prior to release.

I disagree. The company knows it will ship more units if they don't anounce or release a demo until AFTER the product has been out for a few weeks.

Bioshock already has great presscoverage and word-of-mouth, so releasing a demo won't help "get the word out". In fact, they can only lose with a demo - a lot of people would play the demo, be fairly indifferent to the game, and pass on it, who would otherwise have purchased the game for $50 to find this out. Just remember: even brilliant games like Max Payne 2 and Far Cry have people who say they don't like them or didn't see what was so special about them. These are the customers the business risks losing if a demo is released - regardless of the game's quality.

What do you think those publishers are paying all those MBA grads for?

I really want one, not because I'm not convinced about the game, but because I want to be sure that my computer will actually run the game at a reasonable level. Most of my computer meets the recommended specs, but I'm only at 1gb of ram, so I want to see how that will impact me.

I'm quite capable of seeing the required/recommended specs and comparing them with my own, but sometimes developers are a little "generous" with their games. Some games won't even really run on the recommended specs, while others run pretty well (though at 800x600 and low quality) on the minimum specs. It would be nice to confirm how the game would actually play on my system.

uhmm.... because the game may NOT be one of the top 3 FPS games ever made? He says "it will", but he's never played it. Maybe it will be, maybe not, but it's far too early to say Bioshock is in the top 3 of all time. It hasn't even been released yet!!!

Just read the user reviews once the game comes out... read other games that people have reviewed to see if they share your same likes. If you find someone that shares your favourite games, and they rate Bioshock good, you have a pretty safe bet in liking it.

Just don't go with reading the "professional" reviews, they are not what you should go by. Most feel pressure into giving a fair review even if they didn't like the game.

Ugh, now I'm definetly getting it for my Xbox 360 instead of PC. If I can't run it looking decent on my PC then I don't want to buy it for the PC. A demo would have shown me what it would have looked like.

I've already pre-payed for the game in full, but then again I've also never been let down by Irrational and don't see why they'd start now.

Anyway, that's not what I'm posting here for. Apparently there might be a demo after all... in Germany something called 'Bioshock demo' just finished going through the approval stages (It got an M) and Fileplanet also briefly had a Bioshock demo tag up before it was taken down, and those are only two examples. 2k Elizabeth over at TTLG also mentioned she's got something to say when earlier she was adamant there was no demo in the works...

So it's starting to look more than possible there just might be a demo coming out soon. Just thought you all might want to know, keep yer fingers crossed.

Your demo is playing System Shock 2, which is made by the same people who are making BioShock. You can find it "legally" for free on HomeOfTheUnderdogs, since the parent company who developed the game (Looking Glass) doesnt exsist anymore AFAIK.

Anyways, if this article here still wont sway a diehard beleif that a demo MUST be shown: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/32465

Then your loss. I can pretty much say that this has a good probibilty of being a great game, even without a demo. Demo's somtimes are not even good (take SupCom's demo, great game, horrible demo). If your smart enough to go snooping around and draw conclusions from reasearching about the game for a small amount of time about what people say about it, and what you like in your games, then you wont need a demo anyways.

I'm going to buy it even if my system has aged, and I'm of the view that even if it doesn't run it I'll wait until I have a system that does run it, as the company did a good job of its spirtual predecessor System Shock 2 and I am going to buy it because of that.

everyone knows the game will be AAA and above material, but i agree with all you pc users wanting demos and stuff. Im gonna get it on the 360 since my pc cant handle it, but i see where everyone is going with wanting to figure out if it runs smoothly or not on your rig.

I have enough faith in Irrational to get this game without playing a demo. BioShock is one of only a limited handful of upcoming games I'm willing to buy without trying it first.RobertBowen

my thoughts as well

Doesn't anyone read a thing called reviews? "Oh it doesn't have a demo, I'm not getting it ever!", sadly more people are willing to say that line more than they should. It's called common sense, do your research and if there is a demo, check it out and it's a plus, but if there isn't then keep researching the game and if you still want to buy it, then go ahead.
