I found something on ebay that says it comes with the key only. Now, AFAIK, that means that you can use the CD Key to activate the game on steam and play like normal. However, the current bid is at $2.25, with only 15 hours left. That seems kind of suspicious, am I missing something? And it has free shipping.

Check the feedback score. If 99% and above, I usually will trust the seller.

Secondly, read the feedback comments. As many as you can and read the negative comments too! Not just the positive ones. I purchased Medal of Honor when it first came out for $30 and it was legit. As for the bid and time left, that's normal. Some auctions don't get bids on it until the last hour or even the last few minutes.

Lastly, check if it's in English language and not Russian or something else. When I purchased my copy of Medal of Honor, the seller sent me the CD-key with the picture of it on the CD case. Maybe you can check or ask the seller if that's how he'll be sending you the email with cd-key. I wouldn't buy it if he/she sends just the code with no photo.

The feedback is 100%, so I don't think it's fake. What I'm wondering is if I'm misunderstanding what the thing he's selling does, and if I can actually play the game with it.

Well, if you read some of the positive feedback scores with comments left: Sent the key in three minutes, no trouble at all. A+, would buy from again. Member id div.exe ( Feedback Score Of 3 ) Nov-13-10 15:42 ~tav~ COD ~ Call of Duty ~ Black Ops ~ NEW ~ Key ONLY ~ (#330495205444) A little messy there but you can see some of the comments on the site. Once he sends you the CD-Key, all you have to do is redeem the game via STEAM by inputing the CD-key. The game will commence downloading.

Ok, so it is the full thing. Thanks, I guess I might as well bid on it, just in case it goes for pretty cheap.

I knew you could activate Valve games on steam, but I didn't know you could activate Black Ops on it.

Well, Black Ops must be activated through STEAM. Even for retail version (which I purchased).

Really? It forces you to activate through Steam? I would anyways, but forcing you to is going kind of far.

I don't think you should buy any PC games from Ebay. ESPECIALLY if you need to use your Steam account. What if the key he/she sends you doesn't even work? Another bad scenario would be if he/she sent you a pirate key and possibly banned your Steam account.

There are cases where it's legit. Like I told the TC earlier, make sure he/she sends a photo of that CD-key attached to that retail box/case. If not, then NO BUY.

BE CAREFUL! I bought COD:MW2 at the store simply because I wanted a hard copy. Well steam wouldn't let me activate it. Apparently it needed to be purchased through steam in order for steam to activate it. It was a pain, couldn't add any of my friends.

Well obviously in those cases it would be legit. However, it still could already be in use like I said before.

It doesn't need to be purchased through STEAM (digital download). I purchased a retail copy of MW2 from the store and it activated through STEAM perfectly fine. This statement is false. The only reason why it wouldn't work is if you purchased a copy that was opened and perhaps stolen by a sales associate.

Dude Im serious. It would NOT let me register it through steam. I looked it up and did all the BS - reading post. I don't know why. Also, it was actually MW:1 now that I remember it.

Modern Warfare 1 does not register with steam...

Only a bunch of games can be registered with Steam. Call of Duty 4 isn't one of them

All I know is, I bought COD:4 retail. All of my friends did a digital download through steam. They all were able to login to steam and play it. I had to launch the game to login and I couldn't add any of them as a friend.

It sucks. This conversation is over.

Also TC: Most ebayers will bend over backwards if you threaten them with a negative feedback. Just make sure you want exactly what he is describing. I sold on ebay one year to survive and I would have easily fixed, or fully refunded someone threatening me with a neg.

Good luck, cheers.

There's a clear list of which games have retail CD keys that can be activated on Steam. MW2 and Black Ops are on that list. MW1 is not.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601

Straight quote from the site:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q

Call of Duty: Black Ops CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is not accepted on SteamSteampowered

Look at your first post. You said MW2 and now you say COD4. Pick one please. :P

Why is everyone saying STEAM here, it's not an abbreviation, it's just Steam.

In my defense, I'm not abbreviating. I just like to spell it out in caps because STEAM is awesome. :P
