I bought Oblivion today, and when i got home, i put the disc in my drive, the autorun thing popped up, and i clicked install. the installer quit after about 15 seconds saying it couldnt locate a file.

I then decided to explore the disc, and all it had was a 57 kb autorun file on it.

Ive contacted bethesda to no avail, and i cant return an open pc game to where i purchased it. X[

In all my years of pc gaming, never have i had this issue. have i just been lucky? or is this a bit odd?

never had this issue either, does the cd look legit? Or has some goon swapped it out? Either 1)somebody did something nasty or 2)somewhere along the huge production line somehow a near blank disc got through.

Most stores dont let you return, but they do let you exchange it for an identical product. Did you try doing that?

The disk definately looks legit.

And, i tried to do an exchange, but this was the last copy. So, ill eietherhave to work this out with bethesda, or get a raincheck for when they get a new shipment. which sucks.

do both: contact Bethesda, then tell the store to order you a copy. They have an obligation to sell you a working product, and they failed to do so. Either way will take a week or longer.

Trust me...if you put up a fight in stores you can get anything. Be polite and persistant.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i exchanged for a new one, and the same problems are occuring!

i know my system can handle this game, the only thing im worried about is dvd drive drivers. Could that be the cause? i can watch dvd movies on it and do almost everyday, so i know theres no problem there, and its an x8. im really dumbfounded by this issue.

Are you sure they changed it and not just gave you the old one back like idiots? If you are sure as sure then I'd try it on another computer ASAP.

Did you check if you have all the updates? DirectX 0C had many updates with August 2007 being the most recent. I am sure that is your problem. You did not mention what file was missing either.

ALL the files are missing. It has an auto run file of 57 kb, and thats it.

I had a similiar issue with my DVD drive as well. I just googled the company name on my driver (actually, it had a sticker with the website on it, drvupdate.com) and then it worked fine. Only problem is the damn update software starts on computer startup...nothing bugs me more than turning on my PC and having to wait for a program i dont need to start up.

So, to sum up, try updating your drive drivers.

you know, i actually got a bit happy when i thought of upgrading the dvd drive drivers earlier, but it turned out to be a mega fail as well.

i explored my hl2 disk, also a dvd rom, and it was completely normal. what im thinking, is target may be ruining the disk when they run it over the alarm deactivating thing, due to its lack of a plastic case. its just in a sleeve.just a theory. i have no idea.

and stupid a$$hat target wont give me anything but the same game of course.

i think my only hope now is bethesda. ive been emailing to no avail. i guess its because its the weekend. but not anymore.

Did you try it on another pc or not? I think I remeber the copy protections makes it so you can't see all the files on the DVD but they're still there (I just made backups a couple of months ago). There's pc's everywhere...try another one.

after hours of browsing forums, i came across the answer.

Roxio easy media creator.

Uninstalled that, game ran fine. apparently it wouldnt allow my drive to read the dvd. how ridiculous.

I thought that Roxio might be the culprit when i started reading this one, my girlfriend had the same type of issue with a couple DVD's and it turned out to be the same thing. I have to agree, Roxio makes garbage. Nero is the way to go.
