Blizzard has two big releases slated for 2010, in the form of StarCraft II and the WoW expansion Cataclysm. Being a developer known to patiently hone and sharpen its titles long past projected release dates, having these two game come out in the same year is akin to the stars aligning. Keeping in mind this miracle, Blizzard executive Rob Pardo's confirmation that Diablo 3 won't being arriving in 2010 should come as no surprise.

I'm not surprised. At least we got Torchlight to play until release.

There are some saying that the release of Torchlight has stumped Blizzard in a way unlike any other. A game made by its former employees, reaching a massive level of success, and pretty much showing what Diablo III represents poses a serious problem to Blizzard. They are reaping their crops they harvested when they sucked up and sold themselves out to corporate beings and merging with Activision.

I see it very differently, rather the success of World of Warcraft has position Blizzard in a space to ease development and do what their essentially desire. Had WoW not been as successful as it is today then certainly I believe both SCII and Diablo 3 would had already been distributed.

I agree 110% WoW gives them the needed income to allow blizzard to do what they want to do. It gives them the time needed to spend perfecting games, rather than rushing them out like some Publishers trying to maintain themselves. I really doubt Blizzard is worried about the success of torchlight, many of the people who made that game are former blizzard employees, who probbably have friends in blizzard going "knew you could do it man" as they start their own company from next to nothing.

I'm sorry but, anyone who thought that Diablo 3 was coming out in 2010 after Starcraft 2 got pushed back was just stupid. No two ways around it.

This is so **** true. If WoW died a few years ago, by now we have had played SC 2 and all 3 expansions, Diablo 3 and Starcraft Ghost.:x

I still wonder how could people expect this game to be out in late 2009 or even in 2010. I give it another 2-3 years from now.

There's so many things wrong with this. Blizzard had no say when its publisher, Vivendi, merged with Activision. The only reason that the Blizzard name is now used by the publisher, is because it was far and away Vivendi's biggest asset, and it had more name recognition than Vivendi itself. And Torchlight is a literal clone of Diablo II. There is nothing new about it, so to say that it is a threat to a sequel is just plain dumb. Especially when it lacks multiplayer, which is what made Diablo II such a succes in the first place.

Torchlight may have had a spark of success, but Diablo is a legendary franchise among gamers, it's on a completely different level. Let's put it this way - Torchlight is a highly-moddable 3D Diablo 1. Maybe *if* they continue the franchise properly it may be a blow to current Blizzard. But by the time they do this, I bet SC2, D3 and the new MMO will be out.

And I don't think they had a choice when merging with Activision, so I wouldn't blame it on them, although, well :( ...

SCII 2010, DIII 2011, SCII 2012, new MMO 2013. I know it's probably a bit dreamy, but I still think it'll be mostly like that.

I knew that D3 wouldn't be out in 2010. Blizz can't even get a Patch for D2 out that they announced back in march.

I love Torchlight, but come on. That's barely a blip on the radar compared to Blizzard's success. I seriously doubt they are worried about anything. Also, Torchlight was pretty much a by the numbers Diablo 2 clone. Still a great game, but did absolutely nothing to advance that genre of game. And it doesn't even have multiplayer.

Besides the concious move to simultaneously make 3 million nerds jiz their pants at the exact same time, why would Blizzard announce this game so early?

But they haven't delayed Diablo 3. Diablo 3 has never even had a remote launch-window, saying it isn't coming out next year isn't a delay, especially when the vast majority of gamers knew it anyway.
