We all know Blizzard dominates(ed) the MMO market with WoW, and they recently announced another one in the process, and claimed it will be totally different.

Speculate:

What do you think the theme / style will be?

Release?

Will it overcome WoW and dominate the genre?

If it isn't World of Diablo and friends :) then i guess it will be something that has no connection with the present Blizzard games. As for it's release date it will probably be set in 2010... in any case after the release of Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.As for the comparison with WOW i think it will be very hard to overthrown the current subscribing rate of WOW...that is if the oncoming game will be similar to WOW.It will take something really "special" to change the current hierarchy of MMOs.

Well they said they don't want it to compete with WoW, and that it will be a new IP. Now, how exactly they are going to make it "not compete with WoW" is up to anybody's interpretation.

The only thing I can see they could possibly do to make it nothing like WoW so as not to take away from the player base is make some sort of MMO FPS. Which would be very interesting to see Blizzard tackle since they've never made an FPS ever. If it's any sort of questing game, regardless of whether it's sci fi or what, it's going to be competing with WoW as it would be the same old thing only with a new coat of paint.

I'm quite sure it won't be fantasy-based because of WoW. But then again, Diablo is the perfect concept for a MMO when you think about it. But then it may end up like Hellgate.

Maybe Starcraft Universe, a sci-fi MMO? Who knows.

It doesn't matter though. It won't come out until 2015 anyway.:P

Blizz already stated it's not going to be an existing IP. It's going to be a new universe.

I hoping it's something revolutionary in terms of game mechanics. Really tired of click combat and tank and spank style fighting most MMO's have. Even AoC, with it's real time sword attack system, is essentially played the same way as WoW or the other MMO's.

Well, than that answers my question.

Blizzard working on a new universe....hmmm....I wonder what they're thinking about.

They wouldn't make a World of Diablo when Diablo 3 is going to be released in like a year..

I agree with you here. I'm tired of abilities and hotkey bars and pressing weird combinations of buttons to perform silly buffs and debuffs that make no sense. I want completely different game mechanics, because the trend that most MMO's are going in now is pretty boring.

However, I'm not sure if Blizzard is really the one to do that. Maybe, maybe they would. But when was the last time they did something truly revolutionary? World of Warcraft didn't have many new ideas, it was just conglomerating previous MMO concepts into a better overall package, but it lacked unique design (aside from the universe itself).

The last time Blizzard tried to get away from the norm was Starcraft: Ghost, iirc. And that didn't go so well. Still, I will remain cautiously optimistic :)

Good point and I agree. But maybe they could "streamline" a different type of MMO instead of your typical fantasy based MMORPG. Would love a MMO styled similar to Outlands in terms of environment and gameplay.

That will be too much for a gamer's heart to take after Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 :) . It wouldn't be a huge surprise to find out that Blizzard is developing Warcraft 4... sometime in 2012 that is.

Well Morhaime (CEO of Blizzard) has said that its not going to be WoW 2 but has not said whether its a new IP or not. He has also stated that it will be something different. He also said that it is only a small group of highly experienced Blizzard employees at this point.

Another interesting tidbit was that Jeffrey Kaplan has made mentions of this next MMO being on the consoles. He said that they have developers from swinging ape studios who know what they are doing on the consoles so we may be seeing some tricks up their sleeves in the coming years.

Obviously, I would love to see something completely new and different, but going to the consoles which has been hinted at would be dissapointing news.

Yes, a game that doesn't exist will probably be blown away by one that does.

I don't think the intellectual property is as important as the game systems. They can make another fantasy IP if they create a radically different game. I hope they go more into an open-ended sandbox and freedom based game. Some strategy elements might also be cool. I'm looking for an mmorpg that really breaks the mold, and Age of Conan nor Warhammer Online did it for me.
