blu ray on pc help

i have no idea about video formats and things like that but if i have a blu ray or HD dvd file can i watch that on my computer using vlc or some other program will it be high definition? or do i need some software or cable?

Blu-ray and HD DVD are types of DISKS, as in hard, physical, things that look like DVDs. You need to have a Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive in you computer to play them. If you knew that and have a compatible drive, then you need to have a load of HDCP-complient hardware, including graphics card and monitor. Once you have that you need the correct playback software. I highly doubt that VLC, which is a great player (my default), will be able to. The only one that I know of is from Nero.
