Get both ... wow i didnt think it was possible to make a dual player :D

Now you don't have to choose between HD DVD and Blu-ray, or worry about so-called "format wars." The LG BH100 plays Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, letting you experience both of these exciting new high-def formats with one convenient player. Not only can the BH100 play both types of discs, it can also output the picture of either one to your compatible HDTV in top-of-the-line 1080p resolution, for incredibly lifelike, ultra-detailed images.

Details:
» plays Blu-ray and HD DVD high-definition discs
(selectable output resolution: 1080p signals available through HDMI output only; 720p/1080i signals available through HDMI or component video)   » plays DVD-Video, DVD-R & DVD-RW, and DVD+R & DVD+RW   » does not play any type of audio CD   » selectable 720p/1080i video upconversion for DVD
(upconverted video available through HDMI output only)   » built-in audio decoding for Dolby® Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD (2-channel)   » built-in audio decoding for Dolby Digital, DTS®, and multichannnel uncompressed PCM   » BD-Java interactive capability   » HDMI digital output (combines video and multichannel audio with HDCP copy protection)   » 1 set of A/V outputs (composite video and component video)   » stereo and 5.1-channel audio outputs   » coaxial and optical digital audio outputs   » remote control (multibrand for TVs)   » 16-15/16"W x 3"H x 11-15/16"D   » warranty: 1 year parts, 90 days labor

this is pretty old news. It's also not a full HD-DVD player. It doesn't conform to the spec so it's unable to access a lot of HD-DVD interactive features. That's why they couldn't use the logo on the unit. It's just a close match.

It's too expensive, especially with the HD-DVD flaw,

For the same price or cheaper you can get both a PS3 60gb and a 360-Elite/HD-DVD drive (or Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD-DVD player instead of 360)

Big news will be when someone is succesful at putting HD-DVD and Blu-ray on a one sided disc.

No one is going to be able to put them on a one sided disc. They've got completely different technical requirements

And indeed, the player is crap. As was stated, you can buy the new Panasonic BRdeck, and the top Toshiba HD-DVD deck for the same price. If you're that intent on having HD-DVD compatibility, just buy 2 decks and get quality implementations.

Last year I forget who, either Warner or another company, and I mix them up as one claimed working on DVD and HD-DVD on one side vs two sided discs, but one was claiming work to a possiblity of creating a combo Blu-ray/HD-DVD. Reason was is HD-DVD data is deeper in the surface, while Blu-ray is closer to the surface (why they have the harder coating), so if they can do both at different depths and just have the correct player focus to the corresponding layer, it may work. Though, I hear this might have some cons like only a singly 25gig layer for the Blu-ray data.

EDIT: Ah, more details have come out. I may have been wrong on one sided, but they do have 2 sided for later this year. Don't believe me?  I just looked it up, Warner's new format, "Total HD," costing no more to produce and has both formats on a single disc:

http://technabob.com/blog/2007/01/10/warner-total-hi-def-blu-ray-hd-dvd-combo-discs-confirmed/

Again, only detail I was wrong on is that it will be two sided and they will be able to do 2 layers on each side.

Yeah, it's one on each side, and you haven't seen a single TotalHD title actually hit the market yet, because they can't manufacture them with any efficiency. And yes, you are limited to 2 layers(1 each) no matter what. The big problem is making the BR layer transparent enough for the HD layer to be clearly read, and at the right depth so that it doesn't fail.

Yes, there will be HD-DVD/DVD combos on a single side, but you can't do BR/DVD or BR/HD-DVD on one side.

I seriously believe that Warner sees the writing on the wall, and they're not going to bother with more than a few titles, just to get them past Christmas. If the war were to go 2-3 more years, then maybe, but with BR at almost 3-1, with ever increasing sales ratios, and everyone's required release contracts up in 12 months, I don't think anyone is sweating it.
