Well a friend of mine and I are thinking about picking up borderlands, however his rig sucks and he's not getting a new one until somewhere in september.

I don't have his exact specs currently (I'll get them when he's online again) But according to him everything except RAM is above the min. requirements.

So shortly, the question is will the lack of RAM do a huge impact or just something minor?

That was the sort of response I hoped not to recieve, the min requirement is 1gb, however alot of games can easily be run with lower than min. requirements.

If your friend wants to play it that badly he can always get another 512 ram, they're not really expensive these days.

.... like he said, that would be his best bet; he needs to have a fairly good video card too .... I run it with 4G ram with a X1650 Pro and still get a little lag ( thats with running everything on high though )

For a game on a scale as Borderlands, having half of the minimum amount of RAM (even exceeding the recommended isn't perfect) is not a good idea. I haven't even heard of a game released in recent memory that could run well on 512mb. and if the rest of his setup is as bad as he says it is, then that low RAM is not going to make things pretty (no pun intended). Extra RAM isn't too expensive. Even at retail, it shouldn't be too hard to find or pay for.

His friend is getting a new PC in september, I wouldn't buy more RAM (Since it's probably DDR1 and expensive) Also, I hope to God he isn't buying a prebuilt, or at least, if he is you help him pick out a decent PC. I would either wait it out until September, or buy it for a console.

Yeah at first when he told me he was talking nonsense, aka. Alienware/Fail Dell.

I then gave him the whole "blargblargh blargh pre-built is overpriced and so on" speech.

Auctually can get some decent machines at best buy without all the headache of making one from scratch but they always come with useless videocards and power supplies, only things you need to change in it.

Half Life 2 runs perfectly on a bloody 945gm integrated chipset, valve knows how to make games, everyone else does notttttt.

Your defintion of perfect differs from mine.

Perfect to me is 60fps at all times, AAx4. AFx16, everything highest, maxed out reslution.

I use to run CS:S on a athlon 3200+ @ 2.6ghz, 1.5gb DDR1 ram and a X850xt and that didnt even run the game perfect, so I doubt anything along side with 512mb will.

I couldn't run Borderlands higher than 22fps on my old pc: Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, ATI 4650. Given he only has 512mb ram, I can't imagine his other specs being better than mine either.
