As many of you probably know, there are alot of people including myself who can't play borderlands online without having to open up specific router ports, anyone know if gearbox can (and will) try to fix this or is it just a big "**** you to the pc community?

How is this a big issue at all? Just port forward. It's so redic easy. They shouldn't have to support upnp, though it would be nice.

Port forwarding doesn't work? How so? UpNp won't solve your problem, all it does is auto portforward for you. If you isp blocks all inbound it still won't work. Why shouldn't you port forward? very few games use upnp.

Also UpNp is a security risk, since it can autoportforward without authentication. I am against upnp.

not everybody has access to their routers jackass, these days port fowarding should not be required to play online with a game.

If I try and join a hosted game, the program just hangs. I'm not behind a router, so I don't need to forward any ports. This is in need of patching.

Why are you defending this? It should be as easy as installing the game and inviting a friend to play, online gamers (especially on PC) shouldn't have to go through all this other crap just to do something which was being done 10 years ago more easily.

Because UpNp is a security risk, it's stupid, it shouldn't exist without some sort of authentication.

Irrelevant, it still screams sloppy design. Someone shouldn't have to bother port forwarding to play a game online when most games work without a hitch, not to mention it doesn't always work.

Why defend poor work? If i was making some game that focused around coop play so much i'd make damn sure that playing online with friends was as stream lined and as easy as possible.

The game is peer to peer. Most peer to peer games require most ports to be opened than client-based games. If you don't port forward, you can't host games for any game. In peer to peer, you're always sending and receiving more information than normal, as if you're a server yourself.

If you're that concerned about that, just get a good firewall to monitor traffic. In any case, very few games I own require any sort of port forwarding. And the ones I do own that need that are old games for the most part.

Didn't have any trouble in Dawn of War 2 or creating a listen server in L4D. And it's fine me and my friends forwarded our ports and the game works sometimes, so I guess it's ok.

Why would either of these games get requests on how to open their ports for these games if they didn't require some unorthodox ports?

I thought you said it was because of P2P and DoW2 (at least the new game mode not sure about the others) is P2P matchmaking and I didn't have any troubles getting that to work, you said the trouble was because it was like hosting your own server... well when I hosted a listen server for L4D I had no troubles either.

I'm just saying it's easy to include a multiplayer system that works for the majority of people. Sure people will always have problems but the amount of people who can't play this game online just isn't right.

Just because it works for you doesn't mean it doesn't work for everyone else. Do you even have a router with its firewall enabled? Why don't you just forward your ports?

What are you talking about? A firewall is a simple thing, once it sees the traffic it says, "OK" that's in. You need something like snort to inspect for bad traffic, which is not in any households... except mine, freebsd routers ftw.(Pfsense) And you have to build a pc for pfsense or just use a Dell, no consumer router can run snort, much too intensive.

People in this thread, know very little about networking, I mean really really really little.

Irrelevant? How the hell else do you think it's going to work? You use upnp for this, you are opening ports for someone to connect to. Xbox live uses upnp, and it's stupid, it's just a convenience.

Have you ever seen any professional grade router have upnp enabled? If even an option? No. It shouldn't exist. (Unless they built in authentication into it)

There is a solution though, it's called DPWS, much better, but very little supports this protocal.

if everybody is too idiotic to port forward... unplug your router and directly connect to your pc from your modem. You now have no ports to worry about!

your missing the point completly. its not an issue about people "being too idiot to port foward". I dont even know where you get that from, but I guess it makes you feel pretty big. not everybody has access to the router, its a little something called wireless. My 2 roommates connect wirelessly to my router so obviously they cant port forward. and of course people living in dorms and places where internet is provided can not port forward. For a lot of people this is a game breaking issue. but hey, congratulations on being able to port forward douche.

Why can't they port forward? Just give them your router details if you trust them. Also people living in groups, UpNp should never be allowed.

if your rez blocks ports you won't be able to connect to steam in the first place... I lived in rez last year and I had to buy off-site internet so I could actually use it...

Your insane stop trying to run everyone's life. BOTTOM LINE UPNp should be an option for people, in the event they can't forward ports. If you pay 50 bucks for a game then you should be allwowed to make the decision yourself.

you paid $50 for the game... you can play the game fine. It is up to players to learn how to modify their network settings to HOST GAMES. IT'S NOT A HARD CONCEPT!!!! IF YOU WANT TO HOST, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE PORTS OPEN! If UPNP is always enabled I can make an application that easily opens all of your ports using UPNP and streams your IP address to a server so hackers can easily get into your pc. UPNP is very unsecure.

Oh wow.... you elitests are so big... so powerful... your skills are beyond compare, we don't deserve to exist in the same forums as you, or to question your godly status as experts of the router.

LOL... you are all so transparent, people who talk big on forums and put others down have no sense of power in the real world, but hey thank god for the internet right, now you can puff up your chests and be a "virtual man"

To those of you having issues with Borderlands like I was, who tried portforwarding, but it just didn't work, your ports wouldn't open for whatever reason... or you just don't have that option..... use www.gameranger.com I used it, and within minutes I was hosting my own game that people can actually join without any of this port forwarding crap.

I think the main thing people seem to be missing is that the Port Forwarding is a direct result of the use of Gamespy for the online component. I'm not quite sure that Gearbox can just patch out Gamespy.

Thank you, good reference. Personally, I would rather have a bit more control over what content comes in and out of my network, which is a reason I use a sonicwall.
