Ok so i just finished downloading Metro 2033 and i couldn't help but notice the low FPS in the game.

I turned on fraps and was baffled to see my fps in the 30's meanwhile my system is more than capable of running games.

This game doesnt appear to look like crysis, so why does it run so dam poorly? Is this normal.

It's the most demanding game avaiable on the market in this moment. And it's not well optimized. I get 15 FPS average on DX11 max settings :/

It is a very demanding and poorly optimized game, fun and beautiful nonetheless, just tone down a few options. And it was actually developed in Ukraine.

It's superior to Crysis in many ways. Textures, lightning and particles, especially.

With that card, run it in DX9 and High settings.

Drop the DOF... With a 470 I can play it just fine in 3D and DX11. The engine is capable of more than today's hardware can handle.

Great-looking game in some parts but I'm not a fan of the art-style so much. Crysis runs better for me though.

My 8800GT can max it out at Dirext-X 10, 1280x1024, and it gives an average FPS of 20.

In dx9 my old 9800GTX+ run kinda like that. I had to get a gtx275 to get to 30 fps.

Doesn't fraps give you a massive FPS hit anyway? better to use console commands. This game features some incredible lighting effects if you take the time to notice them, but yes, it can run somewhat poorly. I ran it at 1680 by 1050 and high dx10 settings and got consistent medium FPS that was very smooth...

The main thing is to drop the resolution and the AA as well as the AF. I played through it at 1280 x 720 DX11 with AAA anti aliasing setting and x16 AF on my GTX 460 1 GB equipped machine. Ran pretty well configured as such. The poor performance probably can be attributed to the sheer amount of ambient occlusion, motion blur, lighting, extremely high resolution shadows in DX11 and probably all the transparency effects used in the game which themselves will cause slow downs in the z-buffer phase of rendering (this I think is the biggest cause of slowdown) hence why the game runs so much better at 720p as compared to 1080p.

lol, people go and turn every bell and whistle on and say it isnt optimized. Sad, the game is optimized just fine. if you cant tell that its the best looking game out I bet you cant tell that you have it on normal or high vs very high. The game is extremely scalable, and having all the features turned on makes a huge difference.

Runs just fine on my computer. I have everything on HIGH DX10 no AA and 16x AF at 1920x1080 and it runs smooth. Constantly 45-60 FPS.

Look it's GPU limited, if you want max everything inc aa/af at 1920x1080 dx 11, it takes my gtx 580s in SLI to 99% usage, with a 4.2 ghz i7 950. It's just one of those games that pushes the boundaries, and what we pc users like to see. Frames are playable prob 65-70 avg

Generally speaking however, I found metro 2033 far less taxing than Crysis at DX10 settings and 1680x1050. Granted, I had turned off AA and vsync, but everything else was on high.

dx11 and tessellation arent optimized at all it seems. so you haven't seen the beginning of how bad it wrecks your system. its still horribly optimized at other levels too. just turn down settings, as it doesn't look a hell of a lot different, but you'll literally double your framerate.

What he said. A single 460 isn't exactly a beast of a card. People have been screaming for games that stresses the graphics capability of their rigs and when a few came out and did just that, they scream bloody murder. I think, sadly, some PC gamers are too used to playing games limited by console graphics and having their rigs maxing games thats really a 1 generation backwards and when a game taxes their machine for real, they get into sort of a rude re-awakening.

Correct, you need at least an i7 and a gtx 470/ 5870 to max it out in directX 10. For directX 11 you're looking at a gtx 580.

It runs worse than Crysis. At least in SLI.

Advanced DoF in DX11 might be your problem. That one feature makes my fps go all the way down to 25 in a few instances. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.. I probably am. Vanilla Crysis at very high with texture updates is a stable 50'ish.

Yeah i agree:P I ws just using it as a comparison means. Back in the day everyone was like "oh crysis is too demanding and unoptimized" Now almost everything makes crysis look super optimized. Its sad really. I hope cryengine 3 ends up like unreal engine.

Well, pcs are "suppose" to be far superior from that consoel multiplatform games, yet they are not easy to max. On the other hand the pc focused games like this that do "take advantage of the superior pc hardware" run even worse. So either they are unoptimized or all that HUGE pc hardware superiority from consoles is bullcrap.

Take your pick.

have you seen the console version? It looks worse than pc does on low while not being able to keep a steady framerate in places. I see nothing wrong with a game being scalable, I suppose they should just take the settings out that people cant run to keep folks like you happy? Its not like pcs are 100 times more powerful, maybe more like 400% on average. Much higher res textures, better animations, all those fancy lighting effects, physyx effects, aa, tesselation, ambient occlusion etc can be taxing when all turned on at once. God the game is almost broken on console with graphical glitches. So thats what I pick, the actual trtuh not some bs assumptions.

Hey i did not generalize the argument by saying "because every game you cant max must be unoptimized" If you wanna play this way, then ok, this game is an exception to the rule. Since most multiplats look more or less the same on pc and not night and day like this one. I run this game with barelly 30 fps at all maxed out (since i couldnt choose which options i wanna keep on and which off, nice scalability by the way  ) at 1280x1024 with no aa or physx at dx9 on xp. On my rig thats pretty much an insult and unoptimized crap since it cant run like that when i run crysis on very high (high replacement config) with 50fps. Also the pc version has problems too. Many people have found out that the game crashes at a random level and they cant get past it. That happen to me too. I had to use a savegame to get past it.

HOLY HELL THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO PLAY IT?!

*ahem* Now that that's out of the way... not sure if this is one of the most optimized games, but I don't think it's terrible. It has literally the best smoke effects I have ever seen, and some really cool lighting effects. On my system (Phenom II X3 720 @ 3.4 GHz, 8 GB DDR2, 1 GB 4870), and using the following settings - 1080p, "high" settings, AAA anti-aliasing, 4x AF, DX 10 mode, I'm getting generally 40-60 fps.

I've cranked the graphics detail just to see what the game looks like, and it is quite stunning.. but I can't keep a consistent framerate in outdoor areas like that, so I had to turn everything down a little bit.
