I plan on using it for my ipod and computer too. I can't afford to go $400 combined btw. Also would it be a waste of money to buy speakers for my computer if I got expensive headphones+portable amp?

I would suggest starting with the Headphone FAQ, then return here if you have questions or require additional information.

Good luck!

I decided to get the Sennheiser HD 650. What is a good portable amp to buy? Also it's $350 at amazon, will it ever go below that and are there other sites that have it for cheaper? And I've been using the earbuds that came with the ipod touch 3GS, is the audio quality gonna be like 100 times better?

Sound quality is always a subjective opinion. Yes, the 650's will sound a lot better than those earbuds, but considering you are just only starting to venture into audiophile territory, it may not be worth $350 to you. If you ask me, I'd recommend getting something a little lower in price, and also more portable. The 650's are not meant to be lugged around everywhere. Something like the SRH750DJ's (if you like bass), the ATH-M50s (again, if you like bass), or the SRH840/SRH940's (for a neutral sound signature) would fit your needs, as they all sound good and are more portable.

And what are the best amps/portable amps I should get that dont cost a small fortune? Like I said i will use it for my ipod touch and pc. i plan on only using them at home.

I hope you'll be very happy with the 650's; they're very well-regarded. As for a portable amp, the FiiO E6 is very portable, inexpensive, and a strong upgrade to the amp built into your iPod. It is also well-regarded on sites like Head-Fi.

Enjoy your new headphones,

Boz

Thanks man. Just curious whats a dac? I read on amazon reviews of the 650 that people are using fiio e7 which got a dac and amp along with the e9 which is just an amp. Is the e7 better than e6? And am I fine with only a e7 than combined with the e9+e7?

Wait a minute, are you planning on using the HD650s on the go?

Also a DAC is a digital to analog converter and it does exactly that. It can make a pretty big difference in sound quality when properly applied.

Why the portable amp? There isn't a point in spending $350 when you need to spend a fair bit more in order to take advantage of them. Also I would reccomend the AKG K701 or K702s over the HD650s, they're $100 less and are about par in performance. This will leave you with ~$150 for an amp and/or amp/dac combo.

Thanks, what do the rest of you think about the KG K702 over the 650s and which amps/dac should I get? And would the fiio e7 alone be good enough for both?

To pair with the K702s, the ZERO headphone amp/dac fits in your budget and has been well received:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/269458/review-zero-24-bit-192khz-dac-headphone-amp-pre-amp

If I'm not mistaken this is the ebay seller for the ZERO:

http://myworld.ebay.com/wsz0304/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

It's listed for $118USD:

NOTE: ***This amplifer is for at home use and has no analog input. (ie. you must use the DAC inputs)***

I've been using both my Sennheiser HD25-1 II's and 598's with a Fiio E10for the last few months and they're a great combo. The E10 is not only an amp but a dac too, so you get better oomph from your laptop/desktop too in terms of SQ.
