I formatted my HDD last night after having a few problems with my pc.

However now I can't boot my pc, everything goes fine untill the boot screen is over, BOOM, BSOD, and it goes through start-up again and gets stuck in a loop of BSOD'd start-ups.

The first thing I did after I formatted and installed windows was install AVG so i don't belive i have a virus. Then I installed drivers for my GPU and MOBO. I'd shut the computer down and started it up a few times without any problems. The only thing that happened between it starting and not starting was a stack of automatic updates installing.

I tried going into formattt/repair through the XP cd, but its telling me i dont have an opporating system, infact i think it said all space was unformatted.

Any help with this please.

Sounds like the HDD partition table went bad. Its possible for this to happen randomly with XP for no good rhyme or reason, but it could also be a sign that your HDD is dying.

It flashes up for ~1/4 of a second, I have not been able to pause on it (Can you pause on Blue screens?).

You could try reformatting again but go into the recovery console and reformat from there, Did you say some updates installed?, if so then it could be the updates have corrupt your windows installation (this happened to me with XP). In the past, have you noticed your system running random disk checks, without you telling it to do so and after properly shutting down?, that is a good sign your hard drive is on its way out. Anyway id just reformat and reinstall everything and see how that goes, if you still continue to have problems, then id suggest replacing the hard drive.

Yes yes! I have been getting those dick checks after perfect operation and shutdown. I'll reformat and see how things go, plus I'll look into the possibility I have a shotty hard drive. Its only 1.5 years old :x. So surely theres nothing wrong with it (I hope :|).

Thanx guys for you help :)

Just to add to the info...I had a hard drive die 1 year after I bought it. It's certainly possible for it to just crap, right out of the blue. You should at least still be under warranty.

You didn't change your SATA mode from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS at anytime did you? I know if you do that without making some changes in Windows first it'll bluescreen during bootup. Try going into the BIOS and making sure SATA mode is IDE.

That's an XP-only thing, isn't it? Pretty sure the reason you get bluescreens is that AHCI is a Vista only thing. I think.

The BSOD-ing is, yes. XP can run SATA drives in AHCI mode, but it requires a floppy to load SATA drivers while installing XP, and XP does BSOD if that mode changes to/from IDE after the OS has been installed. It certainly could be the problem for the OP, too.

Vista (in my experience) can gracefully handle the mode switch after OS installation.

Vista is pretty easy, I think you only need to enable one thing in the OS before making the switch. XP on the other hand is much more of a mess switching between IDE and AHCI and vice versa post OS install.
