This Plantronics headset is probably the best "cheap" headset I've used. You get what you pay for though. The one I currently own is about 2 years old and the wiring is starting to go bad at the volume dongle. If it's bent off to the side it cuts out the right channel. On the other hand, 2 years for a cheap headset isn't too bad. The sound is decent and the mic is plenty long and adjustable. There's a usb version for $40 if you prefer.

Is $40 the absolute highest you can go? Also, do you need something that's a closed back (doesn't leak sound)?

I don't have any experience with this headset, but Sennheiser is a very reputable audio brand.

Jumping up to the $100-150~ mark will dramatically increase sound quality though. Just don't get sucked in, you'll end up spending way more than you originally wanted to like myself. :P

Sennheiser HD201 + Zalman mic (search amazon for the mic. headphones can be found in a lot of places also.)

For budget gaming, that's pretty damn good.

No bluetooth it's a dead technology. I wouldn't recommend any headset besides Turtle beach but their $69 and above your price range.

I'll second this. Things like turtle beach, astro, tritton lack quality/value.

Zalman mics are widely recommended for use with stereo headphones. It's a relatively cheap mic as well so even if you don't end up liking it, it's not a big loss.

Keep in mind you'll have to buy this as well if you with a separate mic:

I find that it works pretty well for PC on Skype, Vent, TS since you can adjust the sensitivity, but I hate it for xbox live. People tell me it cuts out every now and then.
