Someone on Kotaku commented with this setup, and said for 300 dollars that this will play most AAA games with equal or better graphics than a console. He linked to this public wish list on Newegg of a nice little build, but do you guys think it'd run a lot of games at that price. I posted a build I was really looking into that was about 1300, and I still am going to invest in it sometime in the next few months (by the I bet some of the parts will be a little outdated) but is this build good enough to run most of the indie games and more beefy games like L4D2 and JC2? I had a lot of good feedback on the last post I had, so I hope to see some feedback.

IF this computer seems like a decent build for the time-being, I might just go ahead and get it until I can save up for the monster.

hahaha the hombre is lying through his teeth your had drive is kinda trashy and your power supply belongs in a scrap pile. he has a dual core celery in there and a lousy motherboard. the only good part he picked was the ram and the gpu XD

this being said you wont do any betyter for $300 especially with no OS (which is another 100 dollar expense for a copy of win 7 64-bit). so kotaku guy basically built you a machine that can play most older games like last year and back on high but is prone to faliure. might not turn on after a couple of days and isnt a true 300 dollar machine. he also failed to mention that some games just outright wont run like gta IV where it runs like absolute monkey doo doo on a dual-core :P

so yeah i recommend saving up 200 more and coming back (at minimum) cause it would go a long way and save you an epic pile of hassle. it would also guarantee you that your pc would turn on every time haha XD

i actually wouldnt be suprised if his power supply selection would have a meltdown powering it for more than a few hours every day :P

The build should do just fine at Medium to high settings on the majority of games at the resolution's of 1280x720,1366x768,1440x900,1280x1024. If you just need a PC to play games right now and your not fussed on playing them at 1920x1080 with all the settings on max then that setup will do fine for the next year or so playing at medium settings... till you can get a "monster PC". Personally I would just save the money and just wait till I can afford a PC for $800(you don't need anything more), buying a PC and then saving for a better seems counter productive.

Of course some games are too demanding for even high end systems. Playing games at medium settings won't stop you from enjoying them one bit so if this is the best he can afford right then go for it in my opinion. Hold on I'm going to see if I can build something a little better.

EDIT:

Can't be done... way too many sacrifices have to me made in order to build a PC for gaming at that price.

Again OP you should just hold on to the cash and save up till you can afford a better one, lets put it this way for $600 you would get a gaming performance 4x better for just 2 times the price.

Damn! Thanks a lot for the quick feedback guys! If you could build something a little better that'd be awesome. I might save up to 800 or so. We'll see. But if this rig can run most games at medium settings at those resolutions, then I would have no problem with it for at least a few months. Would even 500 or 600 get me a pretty good build?

Just save about $600-650. For that you can get something really good especially if you are willing to reuse your old hard drive and dvd drive to save you $70-80

Quality isn't so good but yeah it would probably be able to game at 720p at low/medium settings for most games which is basically console quality. The only thing he forgot is Windows 7 which is another $100 or so though.
