I posted here a couple months ago about building a rig just for fun to learn more about building one. But now I seriously want to build one. Just seems better overall than console gaming and plus with college coming up, it'd be nice to have a good computer. So what are some good parts (psu, cpu, chassis, RAM, gpu, MoBo, HDD) as well as a monitor for $1000 or less? I don't necessarily need something to max out everything, but at least high settings with a good frame rate on all games that are currently out.
Thanks in advance!

Also, I have an old copy of FFVII Ultima Edition that my friend gave me, but it won't work on my laptop, so will the potential parts be able to run it?

Here is a good PC, but there isn't a monitor. You can look around newegg for some deals & combos to try to lower the price some. This will give you an idea for a high end gaming PC. It won't max out everything but it will max most of todays games. It should also last as you won't need to upgrade for a while. AMD PII 955 & XFX 650W PSU Combo - $234.98 ASUS M4N75TD AM3 nforce 750a Mobo - $99.99 EVGA GTX 460 1GB - $229.99 G.SKILL RipJaws 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM - $83.99 CoolerMaster HAF 922 Mid-Tower Case - $89.98 Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD - $74.99 Sony DVD Drive - $17.99 Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit - $99.99 Total w/o shipping & taxes: $931.90

Thanks for the reply! I forgot to mention that I already have an operating system (the same one you mentioned actually) so that's all set. My parents have a broken eMachine in the garage...do you think that the DVD drive would work from that?

DVD drives are so cheap that it doesn't matter... As for a build:

Reasons for choosing what I chose:

-i5 750 is a very high performance cost effective quad core CPU, even better than the 1055 (hexacore AMD) at gaming...

-I picked an EVGA board so you have the option to SLI in the future (same with the 750w PSU)... If a year or two from now your system starts to run games a little slower, you can just get another 465 and SLI them without needed to upgrade/change anything...

-Two 500GB WDs in RAID 0 will be 1TB of very fast storage... (RAID is very easy to set up now, all modern motherboards have onboard RAID controllers that work well enough for 2 drives in RAID 0 or 1, etc)...

- GTX 465, pretty much the same price as a 460, with slightly more performance...

- Case may seem a bit cheap, but CM makes very good cases all around and their lower end cases are no different (could always change it as well)...

Uhh the 465 isn't better than the 460....The 460 run about the same if not better. Not only that but the 465 consumes more power and runs hotter. Not to mention thats many say that the 465 is being phased out in favor of the 460.
