Anyone know what's the right parts to build a Home Studio PC?

My brother is looking to spend at least $600, not including a monitor, OS, or graphics card.

Will it be wise to go with a Quad-core A8 or A6 Llano? Also, what kind of sound card and speakers do you recommend?

A6 will do the job. I throw parts up here as a suggestion, hoping that the speakers weren't counted in the 600$ budget. Now the soundcard and speakers are missing, it depends a bit on what kind of listening he's going to do. Are you looking for 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1 speakers?

Here are the computer parts

ASrock A75 mobo 74,99$

AMD A6-3650 APU 84,99$

Antec Earthwatts 380W 44,99$

OCZ Agility3 120GB SSD 89,99$

SG 1TB 7200RPM HDD 89,99$

G.SKill Value series 2x4GB RAM 33,99$

Fractal Design Core 1000 Micro ATX case 39,99$

Total: 458,93$

I wouldn't get a llano, I would get an intel i5 - The extra money would be worth it.

What I should have asked is what kind of music production is this? Is it light editing or 30 track overdubbing?

Will you be recording? What microphones? That will dictate your choice in soundcard/audio interface.

If you're on a budget studio headphones will offer much better value than speakers since decent studio monitors will be £400 for a pair.

His genre is Hip-hop and Rap. For now 2.1 seems like a good choice. He already has a microphone, but a good quality headphones would be a good idea. He will also be sampling and mixing his own tunes as well.

Personally I would just get a low end Alienware. I mean you can't really call Alienware low end... They are the best of the best when it comes to computers.

Just get an X51 and you won't be disappointed. Plus they have a cool Alien logo.

I must admit I thought you were looking for a HTPC and not something for actual producing, therefore ignore my previous post and listen to those who know more about the subject, because I don't :)

What microphone? I'm trying to gauge how serious this guy is, as I can't make recommendations without knowing this. Are we talking £30 mic or £1000 studio condenser? What software does he use? How many tracks are in his average mix?

He has this Microphone

Hopefully this is enough

If he's using that mic he must have some kind of audio interface already to provide the phantom power?

I know that FL gets a bad rap, but theres a reason its so popular: Its a great program thats probably more complete than what he wants.I use Renoise and Ableton myself..

FL isn't used by professionals because it is severely lacking in features compared with cubase, pro tools etc

But it is better for beginners often because of that though. He'd better off downloading the demos and trying them all out. Practically every popular software has a demo.

Kinda getting off topic here.

I learned Cubase 6 in about 2 months though.

That combo looks pretty good. Sound card will be the tricky part though since it depends on what inputs and outputs he uses. For lots of recording i'd recommend an external audio interface over an internal soundcard though, maybe something like a UA-25 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=704

Make sure you get a good sound card to reduce latency.
