Looking to build a comp, so far I have a E6700, moniter, and I am going to buy the case, hardrive, and cd-drive at fry's electronics. I was wondering what ram you would recommend of the two or another type. Purchasing at Newegg

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB)

Patriot  2GB (2 x 1GB)

EVGA 256-P2-N765-AR GeForce 8600GTS 256MB (good one to purchase unless you could recommend something near price range that is better)

Also I can't decide on a motherbaord. I am not looking into any extreme overclocking capabilties so a decent board would be good. somehwere between 100-200$.

EVGA 122-CK-NF67-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX

Foxconn N68S7AA-8EKRS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX

EVGA 122-CK-NF63-TR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX (these were some boards I saw in the customer reviews at newegg)

Lastly I was wondering if you would recommend purchasing Vista now. I have been looking into it and it seems alot of programs are still not 64bit. This comp will be for gaming so I was just wondering for upcoming games like Unreal 3 and so on would be about the same quality or would there be a difference. I want to put older game on it like heroes 5 and a few rts's as well. So would I be better off with Vista OEM version or a XP OEM or any thoughts(OEM means doesnt come with box or directions correct?) Thanks for any and all help.

I would definitely go with Windows XP.

For the RAM, I would just go with the cheapest thing that's 800mHz.

For the motherboard, did you look at some cheaper offering, such as the boards based on nForce 650i?

No i havn't looked at the 650 series. Do you have any recommendations? As for the ram one of those is like 98$ thats pretty cheap the other 130$. I probably will go with xp though the OEM is the same as the full version right just without the box and directions correct?

Go for Vista, you'll have to eventually. Also, spring for an 8800GTS. Get a 650i mobo if you have to. Two worlds isn't just a game....it's a representative example of the difference between the 8600GTS and the 8800GTS :)

I would also suggest Vista (home premium) and 8800GTS over the 8600 if you can manage.

You can also go with memory like this:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145015

It's only $75 and will be just as good as the DDR800 unless you plan to overclock much past 3.37GHz.

I am so confused as to which Vista version to get. The 32 bit home premium or the 64 bit? Or stick with XP. Also I don't know how to install either programs but my friend has installed both and will do it for me so should I get the OEM version?

Buy a motherboard that uses an intel chipset (either 965 or 975), unless you want your computer to be a giant paperweight. Seriously, nothing beats the stability of an intel chipset. Also, use quality ram, like Corsair XMS, otherwise you're just asking for trouble. Zipzoomfly and Newegg both have Corsair XMS 2GB DDR2 800 for around $100. Don't bother with an 8600. They're crappy cards. Get at least a 320mb Geforce 8800GTS. And hold off on Vista if you know what's good for you. It's pretty awful for gaming at this point.

OEM means you can't transfer the operating system from one computer to another. If you decide to upgrade later, that copy of windows is worthless on your new system. Sometimes this policy isnt  strictly enforced by MS, but you never know. That's the advantage of buying retail.

Personally I would say stick with XP. You should be able to run games fine under it for awhile and when the time comes that Vista is more stable and DX10 is more common in games, you can always buy an upgrade version.
