NOW. Postponing it never works, you keep delaying the decision that way, for ever and ever. The only real opportune time would be X-mas or announced price cuts, like the Intel C2D (Core 2 Duo) price cuts that are announced for tomorrow (see this roadmap for info) Building it yourself is always going to be recommended here, because you learn something from it, you have complete control and save money.

im also gonna build it, but buying all the components off of an online auction site thingy...

this is good stuff that i found while searching...

http://compreviews.about.com/cs/pchardwarebasics/a/aapctoolkit.htm - some stuff you need to build /tools

http://compreviews.about.com/c/ec/1.htm - i would subscribe to that, i did and its good, they send you emails every day about this... the first email is the one above, the second is about core components (im only up to there now)... i recommend it, helps alot

yep, procrastination in pc building will always end up with you getting nowhere. in general, there is never an optimum time to build a pc except for now, as with the industry is always fast-changing and newer tech are churning out at a rate that could be described as "too much to keep track of" but there are cases where it is timely to go out and buy pc parts, and that time is, as Dirk pointed out, when there are price cuts and the holiday seasons, where you are bound to get discount parts and end-year sales.

It is almost always better to wait when you are planning on building a PC. I'd say wait about 3-6 months. By that time, hardware prices will be much lower, and much more powerful hardware will be on the market. Every computer that I bought myself (Im only 15, which is why my parents bought a computer for me) I always regretted not waiting a few months

well for me.. i did lots of thinking and planning and i highly recommend you do too. whether you wanna buy it cheap of ebay or whatever or whether your gonna get it off dell... you could look at some specs of a computer you really like, then buy the parts of that computer and build it your self for cheaper... but if your buying off ebay or whatever, then there is no "time" except the time when your not busy and when youve done enough planning, if your buying off dell or soething, then holidays maybe and when your not gonna have building this ruin your life... (make sure your free for a few weeks)
