I just started college this year and I got a pretty decent laptop for now, but as a gamer, it obviously isn't enough until i have a full size desktop waiting for me at home. I plan to spend about $2000 on the entire project, trying to future-proof it as much as possible.

Currently i'm planning to use:

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920 - Retail

MSI X58 Platinum SLI LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ - Retail

XFX GX260NADFF GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

2 x Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

2 x LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS30 - OEM

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card - Retail

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Retail

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - OEM

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total: $1475 (not counting mail-in rebates)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I already have a monitor, so for accessories:

Logitech G7 Black RF Wireless Laser Mouse - Retail

Saitek PK02 2-Tone USB Standard Eclipse II Keyboard - Retail
Logitech Z-2300 200 watts RMS 2.1 Speaker System - Retail

Mhmm i don't know as much as alot of other gamers around here but i don't think a computer will last 5 years... I think at most 2 years maybe 3. Some things you can do to make this better are HD4870 x2 or gtx280 or higher. The HD4870 1gb cost lower then the GTX260 and does better :) And i would consider velocirapter hardrives and im not sure of the exact term but a "boot" drive or however that's suppose to be spelled :) Sorry and i hopped that helped.

id pay in more for a xfx gtx 285 to be as "future proof" as possible..even though i dont like that term. i think the case is hideous, my opinion though. i also think you can get rid of that sound card, waste of money, with what the sound quality is like on mainboards now, i find a sound card useless. you can use that money to get that 285. as for the mainboard....eh, not bad i prefer brands like xfx, evga, and asus in the intel mainboard area. also be sure to check if your ram is going to be compatible with that motherboard, i know the board says DDR3 standard, it's just sometimes some brands don't match up. i really dunno why, but it happens.

wd raptor drives dont have that long of lifespan. 1.5-2 years max, if you're lucky. an SSD as a boot drive would be nice. that's what i use.

wow great system. Solid build except the GPU which I think you can get better for. Try getting the 285/295. And if you are going to overclock, try to get a CPU cooler. Also since the mobo can SLI see if you get the GTX 295. Later on you can add another one.

EVGA 017-P3-1291-AR GeForce GTX 295 1792MB 896 (448 x 2)-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

his monitor resolution is going to be a determining factor on what card to get. a 295 would be pointless for systems using 1680x1050 and below.

even the most powerfull rig will not last 5 years , you are dreaming if your computer will last that much, just take in consideration that your components migh break. Dust alone will kill your pc in that much time also.

well if by up to 5 years in terms of the latest gaming advances, probably not but... in 5 years that will still be one hell of a computer I've had my Dell Dimension 3000 since 2003 and I can run everything besides new games fine on it. Frozen Throne and UT04 work so w/e heh

ahh man don't skimp out on the 260. get a 280, they are no longer much more, and better price/performance since the 280 went down to 300 w/rebates. where are marc's "ultimate gamer build" wishlists? those are always good.

hehe pollywog you called me ;) i detected ur presence so anyway let get into discussion

it True Lundy86_4 is good he can do lot of job when i'm not here usally i't me doing the dirty job and doing all the work in fixing other mistake
after all we all need Suggestion this is forum of hardware : I say it can durate 4 -5 year EAsy the processor it really strong
tough you may want to change it : the next Generation of core iy release in 2010 Q1 : with 12 processors instead of : 8 Processor : process is
6 core Processor unit : 2 Tread Processor vs : 4 Processor unit and 2 : Tread processor : + 2 = +4 Vice Versa

how Ever since you are impatient into gaming this Rig that Lundy86_4 Is Pretty good And Stronger then mine for 1920x1200 Gaming But if i overclock my core to extreme such as 4.5Ghz Id catch up those 15-20 fps that you are superior of my rig in several games
You will need to overclock ur core i7 tough to around 4.0ghz to get full potential of it the 295GTX & 4870x2 are still on a close Fight : nvidia is winning only cause of ATI as Low Staff Into producing of Driver update so they take more then 1 month
to Release a major update while nvidia only 2 week sometime if you accord of 3dGuru REview that shown that TWO 4870x2 CF can defeat : 295GTX Quad sli
vice versa it really strong card on that aspect

but il tell you you'r only mistake Lundy86_4 The OCZ STEALTH & Gamestream or w/e they call it is so like not going to get it when high consummation = avoid it it really have a huge reputation of failure
id Would pick a Corsair Before a OCZ anytime but if want high high reliability : ANTEC / thermaltake / Cooler master / PC&cooling / Corsair HX1000

The Two Core i7 Iv Builded are here But won't show you the ultmiate : cost at last 2200$ ;)
https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=10572506 Enthusiast
can be changed for Other build if you desire
