Hey, I'm putting together a list of parts for my new pc that I'm going to be building in a few months. My current PC specs are a: Amd Athlon Winchester 64 3000+, 1.5 Gb of ram, Nvidia 6600gt (AGP), and a Nforce 3 ultra MSI board. I built it about 2 in a half years ago and it still runs alright but I wanna upgrade so I can play newer stuff better then I can now. What I'm planning on getting for the new pc is: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe, 2 Gb of ddr2 800, Nforce 650i Ultra ( I'm not gonna be doing SLI so I don't need a SLI board), and a 550watt PSU. I really want a 8800GTS but I just don't have the money for either model so I've been looking at the 8600GTS which from what I've read people are saying that it isnt worth my money or a older 7900GS which Is less then a 8600GTS and the benchmarks I've seen for it are about the same as a 8600GTS. So my question is which card should I choose? I can go up to about $180 for the card I know its not a lot but I can't afford anything else right now. I've heard that there is a cheaper 8800 card coming out? does anyone have any info for me? thanks.

there is a new 8800 coming called 8800gt but I don't think it will cost $180 though. probably more like $200-$250.

If DX10 isn't very important you could always get a x1900.

Well if it's comin out in a month or so then I could go up on how much I can spend cause it will give me time to get some more money so that 8800gt might work. Thanks. Keep the opinions coming.

Hmm...well I guess I can always wait a lil bit till I upgrade. Or I could sell some old computer junk I have laying around and put that towards a more beefier card.

I would reccomend this card. Im planning to sli with it, but it already runs great and i can play BF2 at max settings with 2X AA and 2X AF. Also, on a side note, i'd go with Nvidia. Yes, ATI does have some better products for lower prices, but most games are Nvidia optimized. Unless you're experienced in hacking drivers to get around that, your performance will suffer. I only know this because of experience with an attempt to run oblivion on an ATI card. I actually got MORE performance out of the less powerful nvidia card.

I've always had nvidia cards except for our other PC which has a 9600pro and I've always like nvidia better so I would like to stay with them. I've been looking at thew 8600gts's but this news of a 8800gt is making me rethink my plan and I think I'm gonna wait until either December or January to do anything.

The 8800gt will be under 200 dollars and be equal to or better than the 300 dollar GTS. It will be out on the 29th :)

That is around the time that I will be building my new rig, so I cannot wait. Currently I am looking at a $136 X1950pro, but sine no one can confirm that it supports Win2k, I am not sure about it. ATI only lists 2k drivers for the X800 and older.

29th of Oct? (Hopefully! ~grin~) I am looking at changing my case, PSU, and video card end of Nov and beginning of Dec. So, I am really excited about the new 8800GT.
