Hi all,

I am building a new pc ( mainly for gaming, entertainment, work) after a very long time and I have a clear idea of what I want and have a list of parts in mind.I live in Canada and gonna be buying from Canada Computers ( they are near to where I live). My budget is 1200$ Canadian including all hardware ( except keyboard/mouse).

Here is my list:

Case - NZXT Apollo ( 80$)

PSU - OCZ GameXstream 600W ( 60$ after 30$ mail-iin rebate)

CPU - Q6600 ( 200$)

RAM - 4GB OCZ Reaper 4-4-4-15 ( 90$ )

Hard Drive - WD Cavier 500GB, 7200 rpm, 16MB Buffer ( 75$ )

Video Card - ATI 4850 512 MB VRAM ( 210$)

Motherboard - Gigabyte P45 DS3R ( 150 $ )

Monitor - Samsung Syncmaster 20" (200$)

Speakers - Logitech X540 ( 50$)

All comes out to be about 1100$. Note that I will be buying one component every two weeks and I will buy the video card/CPU on boxing day. So what do you guys think ? Any suggestions/comments/feedback will be welcome :)

cheers

Sorry there is a mistake...

CPU to e8400 for less than $200

Monitor to HP W2228 22 inch for more than $200

Looks good, but that $210 is a horrible price for a 4850. Get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102770 instead.

There is better ram at 4-4-4-12 get that. Buy a HDD with a 32MB buffer and stay away from the Q6600.

hmm...I have XP with Service Pack 2 which I will be using as the OS.

I have seen a 22" Samsung Monitor for 220 bucks somewhere which is tempting...but i gotta find it first :(

To the people saying go with E8400, why ? Is it that big of a performance difference between E8400 and Q6600 ?

The 4870 is over my budget atm but thats why I am holding off till boxing day to buy my video card. If anyone is from Canada (Toronto) and know some good places to buy PC parts from, please suggest some.

Appreciate the feedback guys.

Just a quick suggestion - works in the US - not sure about some of Canadas retailers "price match" policies? Maybe Future Shop?

Here's what I did - Best Buy sells the Visiontek 4870 so I went online and did a google "shopping" search (or froogle.com) - and came up with the lowest price online from a respectable retailer (no mom and pops who sell strictly on ebay as the retailers won't usually match their prices).

Anyway - I ended up getting a 4970 from BestBuy for $220 because I got them to price match an online price.

Another drop of joy that I won't get too far into here as I'm not sure how much into the tweaking scene you are - but the Visiontek card is a pure reference card - this means that you may be able through the right google searches be able to find other bioses that will work with that card to increase your max speeds available (headroom) for overclocking. Asus makes one with an improved fan profile - that is the one I use and would reccomend even over the Diamond one. The Diamond one may unlock higher speeds but runs at approximately 25 degrees celsius hotter (not good).

Anyway - looks like a good system - just don't be afraid to get online and see if some of your retailers will price match the online price. (Like I did with my 4870)

:)

Guess I will go with the E8400, will buy it on boxing day along with the video card.

I didn't know newegg had a canadian version up...checking it our now ( hopefully the prices are atleast same as in US ).

Will also see if theBestBuy/FutureShop will match any online retailer prices...worth a shot. I am not an overclocker so won't be tinkering much but will delve into the multipliers later in distant future :D

I was also wondering about whether the motherboard is a good choice as I am aiming for a mid range single GPU mobo that doesn't cost a bomb but is a good performer. I have heard lots of good things about Gigabyte mobos and the P35 DS3L was a popular choice iirc previously.
