i have never built a pc before and recently came across a Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX with 768 mb. I need a list of remaining hardware needed. i was advised to "overclock " this video-card so keep that in mind when listing hardware. as of now i only have the video-card. any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, just a few questions:

1: What is your budget?

2: What other than gaming will you use the PC for

3: Do you want speakers and a monitor?

4: What country will you be buying in?

If you haven't overclocked before then be careful. Done well its free extra performance, but done badly you could damage your card... so be careful! Overclocking should be done with small increases of 10MHZ (or 20 to start with) with torture tests between each rise. I personally use Ntune (made by Nvidia). The performance gained from overclocking your 8800GTX will not change the components you buy for it! Looking up what an average 8800GTXoverclock is, would be a good place to start. You won't always achieve an equal overclock although you might be able to go further.

If you could let me know the above answers then ill be able to put something together for you!

Regards

Patrick

I suggest a 3Ghz AMD X2 CPU.

Now if you play WoW a lot then check out a KILLER NIC card,,,whereas a faster cpu will give you more frames per second (even though the AMD would do over 60fps) the Killer NIC will reduce ping in large cities and in big battles!

Yeah, my old PC with a radeon x800 pro, 1GB of RAM, and a single core athlon 64 FX-53 @ 2.4Ghz was able to max out WoW with zero lag. And to be honest that system was complete overkill for WoW.

ya, what we're saying is that card is like 2 years old now, but it is still a great card, you could play just about any game out on that card, and probably max it out,

but for that budget I built this:

Wishlist

idk if that will work, i shared it, but i dont think it went through yet, but if it did, the psu and the ram are a combo, and the mobo and the cpu are a combo

that with the mail in rebates should put it below $1000

The 9800gtx+ doesn't outperform the 8800gtx by enough to warrant not using it when he already has one. To do that he would need to buy a GTX295/280/260 which given the games he wants to play would be kinda overkill. Anyway a free 8800gtx... its still pretty highend!

that looks like a good build, i would say go with the Q9400 anyways, or at least the Q9300, and if he doesnt plan on overclocking that cpu cooler is more than overkill, i would go with this

AC Freezer 7 Pro, it works great and its cheaper

Probably at a low res... I know when I played wow on a 7600gt frames could get below 30s playing at 16x10.

I played at 1280x1040 since that was the res of my monitor. Even playing at a higher res I'd assume it would have been fine. WoW is not a very hardware-intensive game, anything made since 2002 should be able to run it fine.

Yeah I meant only get the zalman cpu cooler if he is overclocking. Otherwise as you said either a cheaper one or even the stock one should suffice.

the 8800 GTX maxes all games these days at 1920x1200 apart from crysis (i have one, so i know that)
