To be honest, I'd go with one of the newer 800 series i7's. Namely the i7 860. Higher clock speeds, lower energy consumption, same price.

No. Grongo stick with the socket you have or go for AM3. I would stir clear from LGA 1156.

With its turbo mode, the i7 860 will perform better than the i7 920 in games. It also, as mercuryblade09 said, has much lower energy consumption. If you don't plan on upgrading for a long time, go with the i7 860. If you plan on upgrading your CPU a year from now, go with the i7 920.

The LGA 1366 is a better platform. The i7 920 will perform great for some time. Why would you choose the platform that has no future really?

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm gonna stick to the build listed, it seems like it'll take care of what I need.

Because in 3 years, will you be purchasing a CPU upgrade or a brand new computer with a new motherboard? I think it'd be the latter.

Like I said, if your next upgrade will be a brand new computer in 3 years or so, go for the i7 860 which is more energy efficient and slightly faster than the 920. However, if you're going to upgrade your CPU in a year, go for LGA 1366 and the i7 920.

It depends on how much games advance in the next few years. I do not know nor I if it will be better to get a new mobo or just cpu.

It boggles me why people think that Intel wont support their mid-range as long as their top-range...look at their 775 socket, they are still supporting mid-range CPU's for that even now.

remove 5970 to 2*5850, 1 is more than enough but since u want 5970 go with 2*5850 and remove the ssd it costs too much and for a normal gamer it is waste of money

i mean imo from what i have read the i7 860's are good for gaming when there are single gpu's only, But also being that the i7 920's were made to ulitze dual or more gpu for gaming wise is why it excels in that area but either way you look at it they both share the same core just on different surfaces.
