I'm thinking of putting up a building guide for this community to help out with anyone wanting a new build or just interested in the PC gaming hardware(and no more zomg 3k for PC gaming). What do you guys think? I will be updating it and if enough of you want I will put a parts recommendation as well as a building price guide.

Even though I'm in Canada, I will only be doing prices through Newegg.com which is the best site to buy anything comp related off of.

sure, you have my support. Though keeping such a thing updated is quite a task. If you have the time and passion for it i would go ahead, but don't expect it to be easy. Great idea,

I feel that a guide explaining the simple things such as:

Placing a processor in the socket

Mounting heatsink/fan on processor

Mounting Dvd Drive/Hard drive

What cables go where and to what

Are the basic things that a well put together guide should include. Most people building the first PC are really looking for those basic steps. Those steps usually don't change with new technology.

I'm talking more of a parts/pricing guide and I said Newegg.com, the US site.

I'ddefinitely like to see one, I'd use it myself for mounting this VERY annoying fan. Lol.

To make things clear, this building guide is for PRICING, not an actual put a comp together guide. The point of this is for the GS community to have a nice guide to different pricing levels of comps when buying parts and I guess individual part guides.

I think it's a great idea. Back when i was researching to build my rig a couple months ago i used a couple different sources and the thing i had the most trouble with was all the dang wires. I was overwhelmed with the amount of wires, i eventually figured it out though :P

Edit: Just realised your post above mine stating that its for prices. Yes that would still be a good idea seeing as many people need help deciding what to buy. I think it might be hard though because theres the whole Intel vs. AMD controversy and you're almost guranteed to get flamed if you pick one over the other.

Hi Ya I think it would be helpful to put together components which will total

at various prices. Many times I have seen here at this forum, members asking for

suggestions for a build at a certain price point. There are alway a few good members

that will post parts for a build and thus help the O.P. decide what kind of build to go

with. So I would suppose it would save forum posters a lot of time if you were to

put suggestions in so they could check it out. Thank You for your efforts.

The deal with Nvidia is that they have pretty much every game on their MTBP program, which unfortunately does give them an optimization edge. A few years back, Half Life 2, Prey, Oblivion all had Ati optimization and even with those engines, Nvidia has stuck their foot in and smashed through the door to get those guys on their side. Now we see pretty much no games with Ati on the box.

Ati did release a beast of a core which you can thank because they have the same pricing pretty much. Nvidia had to drop their prices by the hundreds when the 4850 and 4870 performance benchmarks came out.

Simple ay to get around the AMD-VS.-Intel and Nvidia-VS.-ATI is to list the best product of each company. Not to say that you can't mention that AMD or ATI (or Nvidia ot Intel) is a better value/perfomer.. just that you aknowledge both parties. Also, i agree with the comment wa few comments above, if you get this thing rolling, this thread should be stickied. Is their some way to delete all of the messages before the actual guide (when written) comes up, because i doubt that people will want to scroll through all these comments. Or just start a new thread. Also, (sorry about the scattered thoughts) can you give an example of how you are going to format it, and what items you would recommend for say....computer cases in the....$100 range? Just to see your organization and opinion before the real thing.

Well me and GTR2 addict have already made plans to make one when we're done with exams at the end of this week. I think you could base most of it off the motherboard manuals provided online (for the regular stuff they'll be better than anything we could write). Me and GTR probably won't cover parts though as those guides are a real pain to keep up to date, by my calculations a section will need to be rewriten every 2 months. Personally i think setting the thing up as a wiki would be a great idea, hosting externally is required atleast as i've found a couple other sites which have similar plans and if we can work on it together we should get a really good guide.

That's ok but not great, it seems very brief. I'm thinking of a guide that goes into more advanced things too like the correct way to manage cables, case modding and silencing components which only seem to be handed down by more experienced people on request.

Currently typing this guide up, I'm wondering what price points you think I should include. I was thinking just $100 increments from $500 to $1000 and then $200 increments from there stopping at $2000?

So 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000 for standard builds, I am also debating if I should put some builds for overclockers.

Nice idea with the sample builds but they go out of date quickly and are a real pain to keep up to date.

Post it here when you're done, keeping it on the wiki means other people can update it, so if one of use wants to add UK prices we can. It's easyer having the guide all in one place too instead of spread out through a bunch of threads.

Sounds like a lot of work to do all them though it could be very useful as i can attempt to draw some relations between what people spend on their different components, that along side a component ranking list should make a good computer no matter what the budget is.

No, not 12. 5 systems and I will keep them updated weekly, prices around $500 to $1500.
