Hey guys, I'm building a new PC for my brother who needs it for Photoshop, video rendering, and some games on the side. Here's what I've got so far, and the budget is around $1500 CAD (I'm Canadian so I prefer NCIX because of local pick-up options and it has price match):

Samsung monitor pricematched to $199.88.

i7 930 $327.31

OCZ 12 GB DD3-1333 RAM $199.99

MSI X58M Mobo pricematched to $138.67

Coolermaster HAF 932 $134.20

GIGABYTE GTX 460 pricematched to $167.52 (Can't take advantage of the 159.99 thing at NCIX, the deal will end before I buy.)

Coolermaster Hyper 212 heatsink pricematched to $22.47

Coolermaster 600w PSU pricematched to $56.74

Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD pricematched to $53.99

Logitech 2.1 speakers (Not a sound guy) pricematched to $22.47

LG disk drive pricematched to $19.72

Windows 7 Home Premium pricematched to $93.72

Total before pricematch: $1636.18

Total after: $1408.05

So what do you guys think? Don't worry about the Windows, speakers, disk drive, and monitor. The plan is to keep this for a while, maybe change PSU for SLI in the future (thinking of throwing in another GTX 460 in a few months), and add HDDs.

The build looks great but the price is about $400 more than what you should be paying. I know being in Canada, the prices of some products are higher. If the case isnt that big of a deal, go with a cheaper case and save that money, or put it towards the graphics card. A GTX470 would be nice to have. Overall, I really like the build, Actually, that price isn't too bad, especially if your happy with it :)

Cause it's a waste of money and you won't use half that RAM for gaming.

EDIT: Disregard that^

The i7 seems to cost a bit more than it should. An i7 950 on newegg.ca is $309.

If you're thinking about changing out the PSU in the near future due to upgrading (adding parts) it would only make sense to pick up a stronger PSU now instead of waiting....go for a 750W from Coolermaster or pickup a 650W from Corsair

Umm, he's going to be using it more for Photoshop and video rendering than gaming. EDIT: Nevermind, and I'll try to look at the Newegg i7 but the Canadian site is down.

Pricebat (some Canadian thing I use to search for hardware at different Canadian retailers) shows i7 950 at $289.99 at a Canadian place called BestDirect. Price match FTW!

Start making many layers in Photoshop in a document that's 12in by 18in at 300ppi, they you'll see it start to devour RAM.

I have almost the exact same rig, but use an 850w antec PSU. I'd consider upgrading the PSU to 750w so you can upgrade to SLI 460's in the future. also you might want to tell him to overclock the i7 930, i got big gains doing mine with the 212 cooler and it makes a nice difference in game :) that rig is perfect for what he wants btw

Everything looks good except for the monitor. Does he use photoshop and video rendering professionally? If so, he's going to need a decent monitor.

Whatever you do, don't get him a monitor with a TN panel in it. I would personally recommend the Dell U2311H, the monitor I'm using. It has great contrast ratio, color accuracy, black levels, response time, and input lag for the price. At $239 it's a steal, but at the current price, there may be other options out there.

I would get that Dell monitor, and I would switch the build to an AMD 1090T based system. The six threads will help to speed up work in photoshop.

If he's seriously considering graphic design it should be very important to him. Normal bargain bin monitors have crap color reproduction and banding in gradients. Also massive color shift with the slightest change in viewing angle. That said if he's just dabbling in Photoshop, I'm sure that monitor should be fine.

So this is the HP one you recommended right? I'll pricematch it with this so it'll be $210.

I recommend any non-TN panel for people who are serious about graphic design. The main problem is that they used to be much much more expensive than TN panels. Luckily recently these new IPS panels have come out with much more competitive prices. So the HP I recommended or the Dell recommended earlier should work well.

Okay, here's more or less the final build. Changes include replacing HAF 932 with Antec 900, adding Logitech MK300 KBM set, replacing previous PSU with Corsair 650w, replacing the Samsung monitor with the HP one, and replacing the Hyper 212 with a Corsair H50. Pretty much everything is pricematched so the prices I list here aren't the same as the ones in the link.

i7 950 - $289.99

MSI X58M Mobo - $138.67.

Antec 900 - $89.99

GIGABYTE GTX 460 - $160.38

Corsair TX650w - $109.99

Corsair H50 - $63.23

OCZ Gold 12GB RAM - $199.99

HP ZR22W Monitor - $210.99

Windows 7 Home Premium - $93.79

Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD - $53.99

Logitech MK300 - $49.99

Logitech 2.1 Speakers - $22.47

LG Disk drive - $19.72

Subtotal before pricematch: $1822.07

Subtotal after pricematch: $1503.48

I'm planning on overclocking the i7 to 3.6ghz (It's what I hear the MSI X58M is capable of) and my brother is planning to add a second GTX 460 so is there going to be enough cooling? And is there a better thermal compound than Arctic MX-3? EDIT - I added the Corsair H50.
