I want to build myself the best gaming computer i can afford, is it really as easy and cost-effective as people say. I have experience inside computers, mostly taking them apart to sell the whats worth my while and destroying harddrives.

I dont want to spend $6000 on an alienware whatever, but i want to come as close as i can for about a thousand dollards. Where does one start?

thanks

CPU: E8400 or Q6600

Graphics: 9600GT, HD4850, HD4870, 4870X2! (get whichever you can afford)

Motherboard: If you dont need SLI or XFire get the Gigabyte P35-DS3L.

RAM: 4GB's of 800Mhz DDR2

HDD: Get whichever has enough space for you.

CPU cooling: Arctic Freezer Pro 7 because its sooo cheap, silent and great for overclocking.

Case: Get one that looks good to you and has at least 1 x 120mm intake and exhaust fan.

Without spending money on peripherals (monitor, speakers, etc). You could build a nigh top of the line machine for about $1200-1500, top of the line (using reason mind you, not just doing silly things like RAID 40 because you can) for under $2000.

With your $1000 you'll be pretty close.

Tippers for processors E8400-E8500-E8600 those 3 brands are pretty much simualr expect one has 3.0GHz stock other has 3.16 then the other has 3.3. besides that they are basically the same chip if you can overclock well and your running a cool system all those 3 processors have the same cache as well. i recomend geting a E8400 and overclocking it at 4.0 Ghz if you have the cooling acorse.

A mid-tower will work fine but you might want to get a full tower if you're gonna do a lot of overclocking. It'll give you much better air flow. That build looks pretty good. It should handle everything you throw at it. You don't need a 600-800W PSU though, it's overkill for that system.

after reading the above posts my advice is that you make sure you get a single card solution with the ability to CF or SLI b/c at a $1000 price point you will wanna upgrade eventually, and the graphics card will be the easiest place to do that. (no new cpu slot/ ram standard etc)

If you want to save money don't get a sound card at all. They hardly make a difference from most onboard sound, especially for their price.

You can look around the rest of the site but thats the build a tower section, select a range and build away

Or even better

PC Specialist

Ive select the build a desktop link so you can start from there

then you still have to mess around with the middle-man and blow hundreds of more dollars for a worse rig, my one concern before getting started is what if i put all this money into it and then it just doesnt work you knoi guess experienced people dont get that cuz they kno wat theyre doing

All motherboard come with sound but no EAX effect higher then 1.0 So If you platy game of 2003 + that as EAX support you won't hear the smooth sound of EAX unless you go X-FI Azutech Prelude or X-Fi Creatives
but for that you need headphone or 5.1 To have a real feeling of 5.1
like my freind EAX 2.0 in some game is smooth. compare to my Digital Surround Standart. but what is really amazing is EAX 5.0 hope more game come with it :P
Like the only mmo to have top-notch sound effect is Lord of the ring online / I heard of Age of conan to have EAX support not sure tough.

i know some soundcard of 2001's that defeat anytime your on-board motherboard soundcard. but just telling you
unless you have lot of wats. hihg quality sound system like X-51 & Beyond. then you probabely won't make a big diffefrance with EAX or not. Soundcard of X-FI preludes said to 15% + FPS in game proven by Benchmark with on-board compare.
so you get like i donno instead of 68fps. 73fps. +

Rather than make another thread, a buddy of mine is building me a new computer, and has recommended this, but it seems like over kill to me:

Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 (4 X 2.40GHz) 1066MHz FSB/8MB Cache

8GB CORSAIR DOMINATOR 1066MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY (4x2GB)

ASUS® RAMPAGE FORMULA: DUAL DDR2, S-ATA II, 2 x PCI-Ex, 2 x PCI

2x 2048MB RADEON HD 4870X2 PCI Express + DVI

He claims it'll be "a monster" but it seems to me like it'll just be a lot of wasted power.

yup everything is overkill expect the processor i suggjest a core duo if your strictly gaming if your doing multimedia and more the q6600 is a great processor but for gaming pick up a E8500-E8600 is you want truly overkill lol.
