I know next to nothing about buying computers.

Now I do know about RAM, Memory, video cards etc.

But what is a good brand? Obviously I cannot build my own nor do I know anyone who can. I am not against learning how to build one if building one is that much cheaper than buying one straight from a store.

I'm looking for a good gaming computer for AoC.That said, can anyone help me find a good gaming rig? I already have a good monitor, just need the desktop.

If you are really interested in helping me out, my email is valve999@hotmail.com, I will appreciate any help greatly.

Knowing next to nothing about computer?!?! Prefect! Lets get you building your own PC! .. And no I'm not kidding, putting the windows CD in the drive is harder then putting the thing together.

Although you are taking a risk, damaged parts falty brands and human error... Seriously, after building your own PC you feel like you accomplished something, its something that I think everyone should do. You gain a whole lot of knowledge doing it too... Research is your friend before you buy and build..

But if you don't go that route then it will not be cheap, a decent prebuilt PC is normaly marked up 50-100% of its true value (Some my argue with that, but it seems about right).

If you want to most out of your money make the PC yourself... or get someone to do it for you.

If I can get a 3000 dollar computer for 1500-2000 I will learn to build it myself if it takes weeks on end to learn.

Also what is your guys opinion on video cards, brand-wise?

NVIDIA. Hands down. If you are looking to spend a crapload, then get the 9800 GT (GTS/GTX?) If you aren't looking to spend that much, then the 8800 GTS will do fine. I would suggest the 8800 GTS. It's like $300-$400 cheaper, depending where you are. The ATI 3870 Crossfire might be okay, but I think it costs quite a bit.

you can get a barebones kit, some of them come already pre-built and all you do is plug in your GPU & Ram then load the OS.

it really takes all the fear out of building a PC and saves you money.

Oh boy! If you alread have things like Monitor, Keyboard, mouse, and speakers then 1500-2000 is OVER KILL.. but, you will get a AWESOME rig for that price range something alot of people here would drool over. With building your own PC I would always start out small 500-600 bucks will get you something that will play AoC really well, and last you a year or two with a small upgrade here and there.

To get that same 500-600 PC from a place like dell, gateway, or HP you would spend anywhere from 1000 to 1500 bucks.

...if you want to play AoC you don't need cross fire or SLI

heck a HP or Dell with a 8800GT can max that game out for a $1000

Here is a step by step guide to building your own PC.. The steps are on the left hand side if you want to skip through real quick..

http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/

You'll notice everything is real simple. You need to make your own decision though, its your money and your time. But building your own PC can be really fun, as long as you don't run into any problems.

That is roughly what I have right now, with nvidia 7800 GTX graphics card. I lag a lot when playing most games, I get a steady 30 FPS on WoW, although it feels like 60, can't really notice it.

That sounds really neat sinfulpotato, I guess I will be learning how to build my own computer so I can spend the money on a better gaming rig.

I'll give you one piece of information that costed me three systems to learn............get a good motherboard .....a really good one ..........as far as u can go........also if it means u should put half of your computers budget on a powerfull motherboard. The latest motherboards give you the potential to install the latest chips for the next 3-4 years .

I max it out with an AGP 8x X800XT and get 60 all around in the old world, in outlands its decent always 28+ except for big places like shatt. I keep my system clean though :\

it depends on your operating sysytem, if its XP then 2GB is fine but for Vista the more the better.

I totally agree with you. You should never be stingy with the motherboard since EVERYTHING is connected to it. This point can also be used for a PSU (power supply as well).
