Guys I am going to be replacing our 10 year old desktop with a new laptop. I have decided that I dont want another desktop as we like to have our computers mobile room to room in our house. My plan is to get one that will obviously be able able to handle everyday type tasks, but one that will also game from time to time. I am currently looking at this one....ASUS G75VW-TH71 Gaming Notebook - 3rd gen Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz, 12GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-ray/DVDRW, 2GB NVIDIA GTX 660M, 17.3" HD Display, Windows 8 64-bit. What type of gaming can I get out of this set up?

Well I'd like to keep it under $1k if possible. I usually play FPS, RPG, MMO, Racers and Adventure type games. As far as the screen goes, Id like to have between 15-17".

it's hard to buy a good gaming laptop under 1K. but if you can find a gaming laptop with the spec you gave under 1k than by all means get it.

get atleast GeForce 760M. i was planning something like 770M or 780M myself, so i don't need a new laptop after a year. sure, they cost more, but it's worth saving some extra cash for them.

e: oh you had $1k limit. well, i think you can find a laptop with 760M for that budget.

Sager has one with 765M starting at $1099.

Then you go with the Lenovo Y510p with GT 750 SLI, I7, 8GB DDR3, matte 1080p screen - it is currently the most cost effcective option. The 750M SLI delivers around the GTX 770M performance you can usually find for a lot more.

I thought so too, but it seems that some user found a work through that makes the Y510p works as it should - read in the link. You'll have to pull out the second GPU, but it worths it and you'll get the expected 5-6 hours

What about heat consumption? Any really good gaming laptops out there that wont fry the GPU or mobo? I'm looking for something with good airflow.

Except even when not gaming its pretty poor battery life for a laptop they only got 2 hours 18 minutes of web browisng and 2 hours 49 minutes at idle with wifi off and min brightness.  Of course if what you really want is the most power at the cheapest price this looks to be it.

So you are really only going to need your computer around the house? If so, why don't you just build a desktop?
