No, you cant go offline mode, I have the orange box which I downloaded from a friend's house cause I'm waiting for my new internet line. But when I tried to play it, it ask me want to go offline mode, and I said yes. But after that an error message apears telling me no steam server found. So its offline mode means "get into the inetrnet, join steam and then go offline again" which is kinda stupid.
are you sure u didnt go offline with an online game? I mean if you go online with TF2 it won't find any servers because your not online..? Unless it said this with halflife2 SP or Portal SP??
don't confuse source engine games and other games on steam. pretty much all source games i tried and half life 1 require steam in online mode. games by other developers like titan quest, sam & max and most likely cod4 don't require you to be online
