I wanna buy a new graphic card. I asked what i should upgrade and most people think its only the graphics card i need to upgrade.

My motherboard can only run PCI Express 2.0 x16 so i can't use cards like the GTX 600 series. :?

Right now i have a Ati Redeon HD 4890 which is pretty outdated.
Core Clock = 950 MHz
Memory Clock = 1050 MHz
1 GB memory.

I wanna buy the best card my GBU can handle.
Next year i'm gonna buy the same card again and run SLI.

I have 2 questions. :!:

NR. 1. What card will you recommend? I been looking at a GTX 580 with 1.5 GB Memory and a Radeon HD 5970 with 2 Gb memory.
NR. 2. Maybe a stupid question ;) but when i look at the numbers in my old card and the new cards there are not a huge difference. So will it make my computer run games any better?

Right now i can run most game on medium/high at 1920x1080 but i wanna run them at max setting and be a little prepared for the future :)

Get a 7950 or a GTX 660Ti/GTX 670. Forget old 580 and 5970. Disregard numbers. Look at 2012 benchmarks. Also, you mentioned no current specs or budget. Without a given budget, you might as well get a GTX 690.

I have PCI-e 2.0 and I'm running a GTX 670 just fine, they are fully compatible with PCI-e 2, you're fine going with a 600 series Nvidia card.

By the way the 670 is a damn fine graphics card, it has literally performed almost flawlessly with every single game I've thrown at it. I give the suggestion for a 660ti a +1 as well, they're going to be a good bang for the buck.

i think the most expansive card i can afford is a GTX 680 :-) Andi didn't know that. I thought that if you have a 2.0 x16 you couldn't run a 3.0 x16

I found the 7970 too noisy so I bought a 3fan cooler for it so I would include that in the cost consideration. Also installing the fan was stressfull for me some bits fell off it but it sounds and appears to be doing its job.

Same. 670 in a 2.0 slot.

And I agree, a 670 is a powerhouse. Especially my asus overclocked version, it runs very very cool and outperforms a stock 680

If your budget it tighter than what's needed for 660 Ti and similar, get a GTX660 or an HD7870. And don't forget the second hand market, some great deals can be found there, and GPUs last a few years if you take good care of them (mostly decent cooling).
