Hey guys, I am experiencing a major problem with COD4 and I'm hoping that somebody could help me solve it. Every time I attempt to launch the game the screen just goes black and my monitor repeatedly clicks (like the sound it makes when you adjust the resolution). It does this uncontrolably for about 30 secounds until a message, which brings me back to the desktop, appears and says "directx has encountered an unrecoverable error. See the readme for more information".

I have all the game requirments. I have:

ATI Radeon 9800 video card with latest drivers

1GB RAM

Directx 9.0c

Hewlett Packard Pavilion M90 Monitor (19")

Desktop is ran at 1024 x 768

Thank you, -Zach

Okay I have read to download the latest version of DirectX for one thing. I assume with that old hardware you don't have the latest version, also try patches.

Tell me how it goes okay? Go now and get them!

I think it could be the vid card. That card is the bare-minimum you need to play.I when I say bare minimum,I mean probably unplayable.

Can you actually start it up ,ie get into the option menus etc?

Or does it just stop as soon as you launch the game?

Its says on the box that you can use that card Pro edition and up to play the game so it should work. Other people have had this problem. He just needs to get the latest version of DirectX I think..

Even if he does get it working, with that card it probably won't be worthwhile IMO.

Yeah I don't know how nice it will look but at least he can try. That graphics card needs to be upgraded.

You mentioned downloading DX ,but now that I think about it,doesn't most games usually prompt you to download the latest version of DX if you haven't already.I'm pretty sure COD4 does.I Could be wrong though.

Oh no! I think you might be right! I was just saying what I read on a forum.

I wish the TC would give us some feedback here.

do you have hardware acceleration set to full in your display properties? display properties > settings tab > advanced button > troubleshoot tab.

Look why don't you just buy a new video card: Geforce 8800 GT (512mb) would do you well.

You obviously are serious about gaming if you are desperate to get this working and you will be able to play a lot of great games with that card for a while to come...

Hit me back.

Agreed. What i use and there isn't a game i haven't maxed out on settings...however i do not play at the maximum resolutions for my widescreen LCD however. But at 1280X1024 crysis @ max is gorgeous and studder free.

It may not be just your video card but a combination of many factors. What is your CPU? Your machine seems dated and you probably really aren't going to enjoy the game as much on the lowest settings. Visit http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/ and see what it says. Alternatively, you could have some sort of software conflict. Are you running the game with virtually no other software running?

Hey, somehow I fixed it. I unistalled the game, reinstalled it, and did the same for the video card drivers. I KNOW that I had the latest installed before, I dont know why it wasnt working. Whatever it was it works now. Thanks alot -Zach
