My friend and I are trying to play CoDUO online together but NOT through someone else's computer on a dedicated server. We both have legit games. We just wanna play a game with me hosting and playing with one computer, and him joining with his computer. (Like when you just do an IP connection to play a private MP game in other games).

Call of Duty only lets you play a mulitplayer game using the same computer to host and play if you are on a LAN though, not over the internet. (maybe they were too lazy to code the direct IP connection option? Who knows). Ok, not a problem, I got a VPN running (Hamachi, which is very cool btw).

The "problem" is, that when we try to join either's game, we get this "Awaiting CD Key Authorization" screen that starts counting up. Can't get past this thing.

Now, the only thing I thought it might be is that I'm going to my internet modem through a Linksys router. I know I have to have the ports forwarded (20500, 20510, 20600, 20610 and 28960) and have done so. Also, I can connect to others online (most likely the one's running dedicated servers) but I can't get past this "Awaiting CD Key Authorization" when trying to connect to my friend's comp. Actually, I had this problem a LOT on Xfire too. The only time I don't seem to get this screen is when connecting to people with DS's through CoD itself, or through Gamepspy.

Anyone know what's going on here? Do you have any solutions I can try or that you know would fix this problem? I'm pretty sure it's NOT my router as I can connect to "certain" other people's games no problem. Also, my friend is NOT behind a router and has made all the proper exceptions in WindowsXP's firewall. We even tried with his WinXP firewall completely disabled but with all the appropriate ports still opened (anyone who knows well how WinXP's firewall works will know why that is done). I permanently de-activated my WinXP Pro firewall as I don't need it because of the router.

P.S. The reason we don't want to run on someone else's DS is simply becuase we just want to have a private 1 vs. 1 match with our own maps, weapons, vehicles selected etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try creating a dedicated server without punkbuster.

also who ever is the server directly connect the the modem and disable all firewalls. Plus some modems have settings like a router so you have to open all ports on it.

I'm trying to host a game "without" creating a dedicated server. I don't have a second computer to do that with. Also, we never have Puckbuster enabled.

Tried that. Tried without router, directly to modem, same thing. I have, as I stated in my TC post, opened the appropriate ports on the router and confirmed that they work. Thanks for trying though. :)

There's got to be someone who knows how to fix this "awaiting CD key authorization" screen thing?

ever since the 1.2 or 1.3 patch you have to create a internet dec. server without punkbuster. then use xfire to connect to the game.

Thanks 04dcarraher, hadn't thought of trying that. I've researched some more and have 3 things to try now (including your advise on minimizing the DS console). If any of these solutions work, I'll be sure to post them here with details as relevant. Thanks again. :)

Make sure your ports are forwarded. Find out which ports CoD2 uses and then go to http://www.portforward.com.

As stated in my OP, I did that. That was the first thing I did actually and yes, portforward dot com is where I went to double check that. I appreciate the effort to help though, thanks for the gesture. :)

Have you tried Hamachi? Its a nice little app that lets you plan LAN games over the internet. Maybe that might work.

Yes actually, someone just let me know about that the other day in another thread. I DL'd it and installed and tested it and it works great. That's actually how we're trying to connect. The idea was that since CoD only let's you host and play the game on the same comp if it's a LAN game, VPN was the perfect solution. Essentially making the game think it's on a LAN. And it worked! This "awaiting CD Key authorization" thing is the only thing that I'm trying to figure out right now. Seems like everything else (router, ports, firewall, Hamachi....etc.) has been tested and seen to be working fine. I still have a few things to test that "might" overcome this CD key thing. I tried 04dcarraher's tip on running the DS anyways and minimizing the console, then just connecting to it myself and so far that works. So I just have to wait till my friend has time to see if he can connect to it too. We'll try through Hamachi and without it. Again, I'll post the results and any success I find here when we can confirm it. Thanks again for the input all. :)

I found a fix that solved this problem for me. I was playing CoD2, but the fix should probably still work. It can either be because of network stack order, multiple ethernet adapters, or bad entries in your hosts file. http://www.lanpartyguide.com/cod2.html
