A wireless connection can certainly limit your bandwidth. You can test this by directly connecting your PC to the modem.Gog
The only bandwidth that would vary between wireless and wired is on the LAN. The speeds are too high compared to the WAN connection to affect it.

Under ideal circumstances the speed of a wireless connection is indeed a lot higher than the typical internet connection. However, circumstances are more frequently less than ideal.
Heya,
When I connect using my Linksys wireless 802.11g router (I use the Linksys SRX something or another to aquire connection =>http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/searchdetail.asp?productID=10436), and I generally get 3.1-3.4 upload speeds. When I connect directly into the switch that is connected to the modem, I pull 'round 3.9-4.3. So, yeah, wireless routers can tremendously effect your speed, 'specially if certain ports are blocked and if your DMZ is not enabled. Trust me, I have had my fair battles with the mighty Linksys wireless G router... and I despise it. lol Great connectivity, yes, but it despises most of any online games that I try to push through. I would recommend you get a wired connection through your modem, either through a switch or directly into the modem.
Another recommendation would be to purchase and assign a static IP address to your connection. DHCP connections are rather unstable and cause enormous amounts of annoying lag.
Hope that helped some! ^_^
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ Click the closest city to you. Internet download speeds are affected by the site traffic, site bandwidth, time of day, number of pings (routers and whatnot you go through) general amount of pple on the net. I've known speakeasy to be the most accurate tester for downloading and uploading around.  Your network card may be poor, linksys makes good cards. Make sure your wireless connection is secure, neighbors sharing would cut yours alot. Make sure your not sharing internet via shareware programs, or viruses/spyware/malware.
avg free, ad-aware, spybot, zone alarm firewall, all free, all good, if you don't have any of them, i'd say get em, scan and let us know how stuff is going.
