If you are wanting something different from the norm, and you like PvP with looting, you might like Darkfall Online. I play it.

Guild Wars 2 is the only modern one that shows promise, at least speaks of breaking some of the molds. We'll see. Other than that imo no such thing as a good mmo anymore, all the good ones are old school and are way past their prime. The new ones all follow the WoW formula.

The only one I would recommend because of the story and atmosphere is AoC. It is f2p now too so won't hurt to try.

Everquest 2 is a great mmo plus its free to play but if you want all the features etc you'll have to pay for all that. But I tell ya Eq2 is great plus it comes with built in voice chat etc.

If you purchased a box and had an account prior to the game going free to play, are you automatically switched to a premium account? I ask because this was done for Global Agenda, TF2, and eventually Fallen Earth when it goes F2P in October.

It would appear that 'good' + 'MMO'= oxymoron.

Your guess is most likely wrong. SWTOR is already on beta, expect it to launch before the end of the year, around November probably.

You can play WoW for free up to level 20 if you want to try it out. Be warned though that it will be quite expensive if you want to pick it up without having played it before, considering you'd have to buy the original game, The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm expansions to experience all of the game contents. Note though that you don't have to buy all of them, but owning the original game only allows you to play up to level 60, with buring crusade level 70, and so on. It is still a good MMO though if you ask me.

Antoher MMO which I'm playing myself at the moment is Rift, which also got a free trial. The common thought at least on these forums is that Rift isn't worth trying out because it's "dying", but I honestly don't agree with that, at least yet. Rift follows the same formula as WoW, with some unique twists, including very customizable character builds and promoting open world teamwork through frequent world events (rifts). It has also got very nice graphics for a MMO. You can check out the trial here: www.riftgame.com/en/products/mmo-free-trial/

No inless they changed that recently.. But the F2P service to me is worth it even if you get the monthly fee.. The problem with Eq2 regular, was no one played.. But on the extended server, its jam packed full of people.

The problem with today's MMOs and most likely any future released ones all follow the theme park model that World of Warcraft made popular. There are still a few sandbox themed ones out there but most of them are a niche community and a high learning curve. In my eyes good MMOs just don't exist anymore.

SWTOR and Secret World are the only MMOs that look interesting to me that are coming out anytime soon. (finally something that is not wizard "middle earth" fantasy MMO, refreshing)

But they prolly won't be out by the beginning of the year. SWTOR I think is the only one of the two mmos that even remotely seem interesting that might launch by the end of the year.

Sorry sir, but a bunch of sp/co-op missions with multiplayer hubs is not a MMO. It is an RPG with co-op options and teamplay, but not an MMO.

I'm playing Lord of the Rings Online with my girlfriend right now. It's really fun, but it's better to have someone you know play with you.

I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars 2 might be up your alley. Who knows. All I know is if you don't give a flying flip about looking "cool", having "cool" accessories, and essentially things that really have no purpose other than to look "cool", then stay away from Guild Wars. I mean, seriously, why is one of the most expensive and coveted items in the game is only expensive because it looks a little cooler? It's beyond me.

If you want something different from the mainstream mmorpgs, there's a sandbox mmorpg called Tibia! It's actually great if you get into it but most people probably quit before they even leave the tutorial island...

MythPro1

Why is that?

Check out their site and you'll see. The artstyle is pretty and unique but the graphic isn't exactly top notch and there's no sound in the game either. As if that wasn't enough, there's no spells or anything on the tutorial island either. Not to mention, in this game, the higher level you are the faster you run so on the tutorial island where you are level 1-8 you walk pretty slow. (on the other hand, it's very fun to run around on higher levels!!! :p) It simply starts out too slow paced.

Even then, it's a very old mmorpg and I believe it's one of the first even. During it's peak it had about 55~k people online at peak times, now they're at 35~ which is still good though. I could probably write a whole essay of Tibia's more old school concepts that make it much more better than today's mainstream mmorpgs so I won't really start. For once, it's not a game about getting max level (there aint' no max level) just to raid, only to have your raiding gear become insignifcant months later. Items in this game feel like they have value and it's not just replacable pixels, there is for example some player-made mystery and very rare items such as the Crown which only one person in the whole game got.

But enough of that, I pretty much grew up with Tibia so that's why I love it and become very nostalgic
