This is exactly why i prefer to buy downloadable games. It would be helpful if you stated which games.

Don't you have to enter the CD Key when you install the game?  And w2hen you install the game it automatically ties the CD Key to your STEAM account.  Something sounds fishy here...

What you talking about?  I bought those games like cod2 and MTW2 from the store HARD COPY, I realize I can put those games into my steam just now...., but I lost all of my box somewhere at home, so I want to find the cd-key from my pc if possible and put it in steam account.  It is not automatically ties the CD key to your steam account when you install from a CD, smart one.

Gee....must have been my imagination when Dark Messiah, HL2, and a few other games AUTOMATICALLY tied my account to steam (yes...HARD COPIES).  Hmm...wierd huh?  And who is the smart one?  YOU lost your keys...not me lol...

At any rate...how did you loose not only the cd keys for all those games, but the CD's themselves?  That's why i said it sounds fishy...

those games HL2 and the other one you listed are the first party steam game, they have to use steam to play, but Call of Duty 2 and medival total war 2, etc are not, they will not tie to steam if you install from a CD.   Anyone know how???

Type "COD2 cd key registry" into google and check out what you find.  All that crap is stored in the windows registry, and you most likely will need an extractor to get it out.

hit start > run > regedit > hit ctrl + f > search call of duty with only keys selected

It will take some digging but its there somewhere. Might want to look to google to find out exactly where though.

oh, great....my cod2 cd keys cannot use in activate a product on steam... I should read the Steam web site before even try to find the cd key....CD keys for third party games are generally not accepted for Steam registration, unless they match the Valve CD key format...

People really need to take better care of their games and documentation...
