No you can't sli them. You could use the gtx 280 for graphics and the 8800gt for physx supported games though. There is something coming out in about a month that would allow different models to be used simultaneously for graphics, but you'd need a new motherboard with the chip on it. Unless you're getting a killer deal on the 280, there are better buys.

Depends what your budget is for the 280. If it is around the current selling point of a 280 in a US online store, the very soon to be available HD5850 would be a good option.

i'm looking at something for under 300$ and the one i found was 290. I need a new card for the fall line up and if the HD5850 is going to take a couple months to drop below that price then i wont bother. but if the HD5850 would get to 300$ by around november i would be all in.

Should be able to pick up the HD5850 for $260-$300 as soon as it arrives, pricing is listed on most sites, just out of stock. Lower with deals like cashback and mail-in-rebates.

I'm pretty sure you can't do that unless you BIOS flash one of the cards to make them either both 8800gt, or both 9800gt. The drivers won't let you run them in SLI together if they are flashed as 2 different models.

A GTX 280 will give hardly any benefit over the 8800GT SLI setup you have now. The only worthwhile option is buying a 5850 or 5870, or plunking down some for a GTX 275 SLI setup.

Besides, an 8800GT SLI setup will pretty much play anything at or below a resolution of 1080P. Unless your going to run something at a higher resolution, or you're a hardcore Crysis "Very High FTW! must have 8xAA!" person, I suggest you save your cash and wait for something actually worthy in upgrade value and costs.

Also, there are many many "SLI" cert. power supplies, and not many of them can actually support a GTX275/280 SLI setup. If you plan on buying the aforementioned setup, could you list the brand and specs of your powersupply? (or preferably just link the MFG page)

My mistake.

This is a bit late in the asking, but what is your monitor resolution and system specs?

Lets say you wait until November in order to buy one of Nvidia's new gt300 cards, the lower end card should be around 300 dollars. If you buy one you can always use your old 8800 as a physix processor. IMO that is the best way to utilize both new and old hardware while maximizing performance.

Yea you need to flash them first which is pretty easy, but do not make any mistakes as it would probably be a ****** to get working again.

If you don't want to deal with flashing check ebay for an 8800GT.
