Heres the problem, my brother is on the computer for like 9 hours straight every time he comes home from work playing Football Manager and I hardly ever get to use the PC.
Save all the advice on dealing with this issue by talking, cause he is in some sort of young mid-life crisis (sometimes I wished he'd go out and have a life).

Now I have concluded the only way to solve the issue is to deal with it technically, my PC specs are in my sig, now Football Manager is the latest version (2008?), even so its a text based game and my setup will always kill the game.

I want to underclock my processor to such speeds that he cant even play it, however can this be done without re-booting windows and can it be damaging to my processor? It needs to be able to survive from crashing but be frustrating enough for him to quit playing it. (He's the impatient kind).

Or are there any other ways of making the game unplayable or not being able to start up?
Also deleting some files will just make him re-install it so that won't work!
Any advice is welcome and thanks in advance.

sigh...

A much easier solution would be to make an account in Windows and don't tell him the password. Even if you underclock your processor really low, it's still going to run a text-based game. You really don't want to risk ruining the hardware for an annoying brother.

Judging by your sig, there is no reason to fight over the computer. I'm sure you can find something else to do.

Deleting his account or passwording the Admin account will keep him off.

It's no use password protecting my account! The main thing is that it musn't be obvious I'm trying to stop him from playing, cause my room is full of beloved collections and models etc. don't want to risk losing any of that...

Well if it's in your room and if it's your computer just tell him he can't go on it, seems like a simple solution.

wouldent it be sad if he accedently gets a crash everythime he loads up his game... Try messing up his files by replaceing some text in some files and when he reinstalls, do it again.

Thank for the suggestions, they are logical and all but, are there any more... very clever ways, like to think out of the box a little I missed the opportunity to fill up my hard drive with stuff so he can't even install it but it's too late and my hard drive is 250gb...

what you could do insted of trying to get him out of the house by screwing with his football manager is to help him with his "Crysis" probably easiest and you dont stand the risk of destroying your CPU

he's your brother right? just beat him up. If that doesnt work hire 19 geek-squad workers to investigate the computer for technical problems while he try's to play the game. If all else fails you might have to restort to using an Evil Monkey to permanently guard your computer room.

Corrupt his files, like txt files or something else, just change anything...a few things. And then take something round, like a tin can, make the edges rough, maybe rubbing the tin can against concrete or something rough. Then scratch the disk in a way that makes it look like the dvd drive did it. Just spin the can with pressure being applied on a flat surface.

Is football manager an online game? If you're using a router, you could always unplug the modem.

I used to do that all the time when my roommates were up at 4AM blasting horrible music they streamed in. Killing the power to the cable modem stopped their signal, but gave the impression they were still connected as the connection to the wireless network still showed a strong signal. However, they were fairly inebriated at this point and didn't have the motivation to diagnose the problem properly.

I did this to my brother to keep him thinking that the computer was broken: This only works if he logs in using his own unique ID.

Log in as administrator and set NTFS permissions to the c:\program files\ as denied to his user ID, Administrator and you gets full control.

He cant play, uninstall, or install, unless he chooses a different folder to install to, but he's not that computer-savvy is he?

And you can set the permissions to only the football manager folder if you want, or the entire drive, so that he can't do anything at all.

You can always make another account without a password and the current with one. The one without can have a block so only the administrator can run the game

Hide your taskbar. Press the PRT SCR button, go to MS PAINT, copy past it. Save it, set as desktop background, keep the taskbar lowered. Voila he thinks the computer is broken.

If he does restart, make sure you tell him you want to check something, and minimize the taskbar really quickly. I'm pretty sure if he gets frustrated easily, he will give up right there and think the computer is not working. Hopefully he won't restart. If he does restart, just saying again, sit down, and lower the taskbar really quickly.

Oh and to add extra affect delete Football Manager 2008 start menu, and hide the 2008 folder, so he can't find it. Just right-click, and click hide and apply. Make sure you also delete any shortcuts, start menus, etc... and watch the insanity insue. If he trys to reinstall it or whatever it will say repair/modify/uninstall, if he does the first two, nothing will happen. Oh and make sure you scratch his disk, because he will just uninstall/install it again.

One more idea just came to me. Go to your BIOS, and set a password that only you know, voila he can't get in, and tell him you don't know why. Once he gives up, put the password in and play/go on your computer.

Heheh, another one, go to your folder (VISTA) for football manager, and change the allow/deny functions, just deny everything for your account, it will say access denied. Make sure you do it for all of your ProgramFiles, hell if you really want to do it for your whole C: drive.

That is all I have now, hope this helped.

Just set the current account with denied access to the folder, and then create another account for you (or just use the administrator account) which will have full permissions.

If you are using the administrator account with no other users setup. Create another user account and set windows to automatically log in using that account, and cripple that account so that it can't access the folder.

Then when you want to use the computer, log off and then log on as administrator (or another account).

Finally, Commodore Common Sense!

Why are you doing crap like this when the basic problem lies with his addiction to the game? If you want to solve the problem cut the source, or deal with the problem directly.

You're not going to fix a crack addict if you replace his crack with flour. The problem still lies with the person.

Go on as many shady porn sites as possible and click on every ad banner there is. Collect a million viruses and trojans, slow your PC down to a crawl, format hard drive after brother has ceased to hog PC. Mission complete.

well i guess because its YOUR computer in YOUR room you should just boot him off when you feel like it, and if he breaks anything of yours you brake him.(that is what older brothers do, am i right?)

or somthing that hasnt been suggested, possibly get a lock on your door with one key that belongs to you and also maybe bolts in the ceiling and floor so he can't bash it in...

that way, he cant physically get into your room to play the game and then he cant get in to smash your stuff either =)

its a win win

Of course, lower voltage and downclock it, put it back up when you're back on it. Lower multiplier to like 400mhz or something  I've had the same issue with my brother playing COD4 when he comes back from UPS (10AM) i was thinking of selling it. My case has a key but i lost it :? I just started being an *** because he always was with me using his stuff. He kinda got the message and doesn't really play anymore.

If he needs a disc to run it, then just disable the DVD drive.

If not, then tinker with the program files as others have suggested.
