His power supply is 300 watts I believe. Could he use an nVIDIA 8600 GT graphics unit? He wants to play Team Fortress 2 and Episode 2, and he does not want to spend a lot of money.

Sorry to say but he's gonna have to spend $500-800 for a custom build. Slim PCs are very hard to upgrade especially dells. If he wants to spend the least money possable tell him to get a HD2400 Pro, it's better than the intergrated chip but it's ATI's lowest performence card. I had one for my xps 210, it did alright, I could play Oblivion with it.

Don't worry the psu will not be an issue! I ran that same card in my HP prebuilt which also had a 300 watt psu and it worked great. In fact I recently just upgraded to a 4890 and I'm going to sell the EVGA 8600gt, which I to got from Newegg 3 months ago. I know this isn't a place to advertise though I would be willing to sell it to you for far less money. It's in great condition, pm me if your interested.

Well they do make low profile versions of the 4650 which will do nice with the source engine games. I think that a 4650 would be the best card you could get to fit that case. :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121338

Check your amps on the 12v rail, it might not be a lost cause. Dell on some systems under rates their power supplies. Maybe its only on the better ones though. Still I would risk it if you really want to try and not spend a bundle. If it doesn't work take it back/return it, or upgrade the PSU if it can be done easily/cheaply.

You should check his PSU specs. A lot of people run 4650/70s on 300w power supplies. You try it and if it doesnt work upgrade the PSU.

Not many power supplies will fit in a case of that form factor and the ones that will are around 300 watts anyway

hey guys just to let you know dell does not use some cheap brand psu's. PC power and cooling makes them. they showed a 375w psu was able to run a 8800 gtx fine im sure a 8600 gt will be fine is doesn't even need a pci power connector

Say he has a very sturdy 12v rail maybe the PSU could push out a couple more watts. But that just means the card is sucking up power thatmay be used for the fans, cpu,HD,mobo, sound chip to run efficently, that means unstable performence and bad cooling. Slim form factor PCs arn't the best when it comes to cooling as it is and are not ment for gameing, ik beacause I used to have a dell XPS 210 with a 275 watt PSU, I put a HD2400 pro with a 250watt minimum power rating in it and the computer was very unstable when it came to games and the CPU heated up to 85C or more. SureI could play oblivion and such with it, but only for 15 minuts lol. So for my graduation gift I got the computer thats in my sig and i'll be able to upgrade for years now without worrying about sizes and shapes lol.

I have that 375 watt PSU, is has 22 amps on the 12v rail, decent enough. Runs my 9800 GT with a nice OC. Not much room for upgrades, but serves me fine. Luckily for me, a standard PSU will fit in my case, so I'm upgrading to a Corsair sooner or later.

Make sure you get a card that dosent need any power directly from the psu but draws it from the motherboard, i dont know if it matters but thats what i did with my 300 watt anthlon 3500+ pc hp and it worked fine, know i have a better rig..

Another time I repeat, I ran a 8800GT on a 320W PSU, although it did cost $70... I always chose expensive PSUs of good brand over larger wattage PSUs of a no name brand.

How can a graphics card be in a good or bad condition? It can either work or not, you cannot smash half of the transistors and make it work badly.

He is right, i can support this by saying that when I had my computer built by cyberpower PC I went with the apevia "580" watt PSU, little that i know it was a very cheap peice of s*** and after instaling the HD4870 the PSU fried a couple days later. I RMA the PSU for a "600" watt same brand and modle pretty much and a day later, fried, those PSUs didnt even weigh a pound. So I went with the PSUI have now which is better quality and 550watts and it weighs 5 pounds and the 12v rails are much sturdier and i'v had no problems since.

do not even consider replacing that psu unless you really know what you are doing... i recommend buying a geforce 7800 for that computer. it probably won't run any of the new games but it will run some old ones. it's the best you can do with that computer.

installing a new video card is pretty easy.. and you can get one for cheap. just be sure you have a molex connector plugged into the card. and just plug it into a pci-e slot and plug your monitor in. it's simple. a monkey could do it. and install new video drivers for windows.
