Can my video card run some of the newer games?

I just got an NVIDIA XFX GeForce 7600 GT AGP 8X 256 MB DDR3 card (copied and pasted that part) and I just tried to play Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and it's really slow and laggy. I had the settings up fairly high but if i set it any lower it just doesn't do the game justice. It really didn't do it much justice at the settings I had it at. I know my card isn't the best, but shouldn't it be able to handle a game like this? Or was I misled? For the record here are my other innards (btw I have nothing overclocked):

Motherboard: Asus P4C800 E (or D I can't remember which)
Processor: Pentium 4 2.8 ghz
RAM: 2gb
Sound: Creatice Audigy Z or something
That's about it I think...

I haven't played PC games in a while and I just upgraded to this card since it seemed to be the best AGP card out there in hopes that I might be able to jump back into some minor computer gaming (I'm more of a console guy) but this is making me mad! Should I overclock my system? Would that help at all? I'm really scared about overheating though. Please help!

EDIT: I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. I'm sorry about that. Maybe a mod could move it? If not could you tell me first so I can copy and paste it to the other forum?

It is one of the best AGP cards out there.  You shouldn't have too much trouble running the latest games as long as you don't need them to be run at highest settings.

You should be able to run most new games though not on max settings.

its not "one of the best" but its good enough to play most games on medium-like settings on a decent resolution. Its equal to like a 6800GT basically.

Should I overclock my system?[/quote
not unless you have really good cooling and know what you  are doing.

I know, but at the moment my money is limited. Do you think this setup would last me for a good year or two? I don't really plan to game hard mind you, just a little.

No, you definetly need a new mobo (motherboard), a new processor (proc), and probably... a new video card. Like... I have a POS Dell Dimension C521. And when I pop The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in, the game Auto-Detects my settings as High. And the game is beautiful, with chopping in intense fights, ie. getting hit by an enemy flare.

Though mind you, GRAW is a pretty intense game, system req's-wise. But, if you're still using AGP, then don't expect much out of newer generations of games. You can play... Hmmm... FarCry on High... though thats no GRAW.

I suggest going with a newer ASUS or MSI board, and pick between AMD or Intel (though right now Intel definetly has the upper hand) for your Proc, and go PCI-E with your Vid Card.

Thats odd, my P4 2.8GHz with a 7600 and 2GB of memory ran GRAW at 1024x768 just fine with medium detail.

Try turning off shadows and some of the lighting.  Shadows really bog down machines, and yes your processor is a weak point but its not that weak.  GRAW is a finnicky game, as well, sometimes it just doesnt like to play nice.

Well, see that isn't exactly an option. Plus I'm not really willing to pay that much just to play games on my computer. If I can't play them with what I have then I'll just stick to console games. The only reason I got the new graphics card was so I could run Aero on vista. Oddly enough right after I posted this i booted GRAW back up and tried those settings except I put the res. on 1280x1024@72 and it ran decently. I'll knock the res down a notch, then.

Ya, that resolution is a bit high for your rig.

As for it lasting another year, ya, I think you should be just fine.  You will be able to play Crysis, for example, but not in all its glory.  Just make sure to buy games for their content, and not their looks, and you should have a pretty good year.

It will be tough, however, since more and more games are becoming dual core optimised.  Definately start saving your money for a new build...I'd say 1200 dollars is a reasonable budget for a new, med-high end rig.

buying 7 series with 256Mb? what a waste - if you already buying one of the 7 series make sure you're buying 512Mb  and if you can afford little more money than go with GT , you bought 7 GT but not with 512Mb??? wierd, anyway your video card still can handle very good with latest games

512MB of video memory makes about a 3-4 frame per second difference.  Its a marketing gimmick, designed to dupe the uninformed buyer into buying a video card.

256 MB is all you need.

512MB is not useless, but it would be for a 7600GT. Your not going to be playing in resolutions that it would be benefical with that card.

Your rig is fine for casual gaming. Just keep your shadows off and low your settings as needed. Don't listen to these retard people who don't see how you can play games without a quad core 4ghz, 2gb, geforce 8800 gt oc 1gb. F'those people. Sure upgrading $1000 every 6 months is great... just so you can play that 1or 2 $60 dollar games at max settings. No, its not. Yes you need a need computer (for gaming) in a year. Save you money and get the $2000 system once every 3 years, not every year like these fools. Don't overclock, that's for people who like having to buy new parts every 3 months because they break them and then try to sell them on e-bay.

You can easily run all new games with that graphics card. Just make sure you turn the settings down a bit.

A P4 2.8ghz is not that big of a deal... I have one with my 7900GS, and I can still run Oblivion looking like a 360 game and max out BF2. GRAW is just a poorly made game from what I've heard.

Get a dual core processor. The cheapest one i've seen goes for about $75. That'll hold you for a year or two.

Have u ever paid some interest in news or post in non retard people forum? O_o I guess - not. 256MB is so enough for most of games and 512MB will be needed only if u want to play game on resolution higher than 1600x1200. And i don't see point to play a game on suh high res, especially if it's first person shooter. And one more thing. I have really old PC (P4 2.4GHz, 512mb, 5500FX 256mb), but i play FEAR, CoH, Oblivion on about 25fps. U only need to some brains and tweak graphic settings and u get what u want (FEAR 800x600, processor options maximum, volumetric lights max, light max, texture med, shadows off and i have average 25fps). And in such intense game as CoH, of course if u are not a total noob and don't play vs easiest AI, u have no time watching graphic as u have to make at least 100amp (4 noob - actions per minute). For the user who posted this thread - your PC is just fine, u can play 90% games on med settings, and 100% games with a little tweak with no lag at all. BTW, there is some stupid games that can't be tweaked, such as Prey. Lame game. I was able to play Oblivion but not Prey. LoL

I just bought a 7600GT a couple of weeks ago and I think it's pretty amazing... it plays the games I like at max settings which is all that matters. Before when I was using a 5700LE I was playing WoW at 1280x1024 with all the shader effects off and everything else on medium/high which I thought was pretty good... but when I wanted to play something like Halo or FarCry it just wasn't worth it.

My PC is now over 2 1/2 years old... but it feels like new since I bought this card. I can play all my games at 1280x1024 with everything on max and it doesn't slow down which is more than enough for me. WoW isn't the most demanding game in the world, I know... but when it's running with everything on max between 50-75FPS it really does look nice. Halo running at 60FPS with everything on max is also stunning.

I'm more of a console person myself (Xbox 360 FTW:P) but I still love my PC.

P4 HT 3.2 Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 150Gb HDD.
