I just bought Mass Effect 2 at retail today and I came home to try to add to it my Steam games list, but I can't find a way to do it. That's odd because you can buy the game from Steam so it's not like Steam doesn't support the game. I would really like to be able to download it from any other computer without the disc like all the other games I bought through Steam.

Is there any way to add it to the games list? I know I can make a shortcut to it on the games list, but that only shows up on this computer. I hardly ever buy PC games at retail so I've never had to do this before.

Go to Your Games page on Steam. Bottom left says "Add non-Steam game..." Try to add it and see what happens. It might give you limited Steam Functions. I'm not sure though.

That just creates a glorified shortcut as alluded to earlier. Can't manage the retail version through steam.

.... yes, it can. Open Steam, go to your games list, at the bottom of the screen click on "Activate a Product on Steam"; enter your code there and you're good to go. Since it's a game they distribute, it'll get updated justlike the rest of the Steam games you might have. If you don't want to use a disc while playing, you may have to reinstall the game through Steam ( then you can throw the disc's and box away, unless you want to frame it or something:) ) ... just remember to save andmove your "save game" folder.

That won't work, its not a game thats published by Valve - it doesnt have SteamWorks integration. Only games that can do that (enter retail code into steam) are stuff like Total War and Aliens vs Predator.

From the Steam support site - Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam? * Mass Effect 1 and 2 are NOT on this rather short list.

Steamworks integration doesn't have anything to do with it, nor does Valve publishing it or not. AI War: Fleet command didn't have Steamworks integration until recently, before that it could still be activated and downloaded via steam because the Developer went through the extra mile to ask for that support from Steam. There are probably certain criteria that must be met, but being a Valve/Steamworks game are not part of the criteria.

Yeah that's what I found a little earlier...that's very frustrating considering that you can buy both games directly from Steam.

but you're able to use steam chat within game without having to minimize, which is a big plus

Most games added via the shortcut method to steam are able to use its overlay, you just cannot use steam to download/update the game(s).

That's good. I was worried there for a bit that this would be another DiRT 2, which I bought from steam but had no overlay.

click add-non steam game and add the shortcut to your games list. It won't update automatically or keep track of how long you played, but you still get the Steam overlay during the game. The steam overlay is one of the the best parts about steam if you ask me:)
