Can Somebody Help Me NOT Stink?!?

I obviously either suck at Civ IV: Colonization, or I'm just not getting it. I fail each and every time. So I have a few questions:

1. How do I get more money to pay for units?

2. Is there a way to get the amount of building time down?

3. Is there any guides out there? (I tried to find one but with no luck).

There are 2 ways:

1. Export raw materials to Europe by loading the commodity onto your caravel/galley and sending your ship to Europe
2. Use the raw materials to produce a secondary commodity (i.e. sugar into rum, cotton into cloth, etc...) and then export it to Europe

Move people away from food/raw material gathering and move them into production.
