I have been trying to figure it out for months. I tried googling and getting codecs and new players and stuff and for whatever reason it just never works. Can someone just suggest to me a good stand alone player that can play mkv files that I can simply install? Thanks a lot!

Easiest thing you can do:

Step 1) Uninstall any codec packs you have

Step 2) Download and install the Combined Community Codec Pack

Step 3) Launch "Media Player Classic Homecinema" (comes with the CCCP)

Step 4) Open a MKV file and watch it

I highly recommend Media Player Classic Homecinema for *all* video playback. It's an excellent piece of software that consumes minimal resources, yet still has a robust set of features. The CCCP comes with a pre-configured build of MPCHC with ffdshow, and plays MKV content upon installation. No additional configuration is required.

VLC also works, and some may prefer that..but last I checked, seeking with MKV+x264 sucked, and it had issues with some of the more advanced features of MKV.

Tiefster

Yeah, Zoom Player is great too.

The CCCP actually includes Zoom Player as well (optional install.) It used to, at least. I'm actually using a beta build, and that option seems to be gone (no clue if it's still included in the official build.)

Well I have been using SMPlayer (front end for MPlayer) and it generally works nicely for most of the media formats

The nice thing about using VLC to play HD MKVs is that it allows to you Zoom down for older, slower PCs that are chugging with the 720p or 1080i at full frame...

I had stuttering issues playing MKV movies with my 1.6MHz Pentium Centrino laptop using every possible codec and trying multiple video players. Nothing helped. After awhile when I purchased a new desktop PC, VLC ran it no problemo (no codecs required). My belief is my laptop sucks, but also HD 720/1080 MKV rely on processing speed alone..

Cool. I was also wondering how to play .MKV files. CCCP worked like a charm.

Now is there anyway to play MKVs on an XBOX360?

Correct, you need at least a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 for 720p and 3.2 GHz for 1080p.
